Your dog’s training won’t look the same in every environment.
A cue your dog can do perfectly in the house may suddenly fall apart when there are people, dogs, smells, traffic, wildlife or food around.
That’s completely normal.
Training isn’t just teaching the behaviour. It’s teaching the behaviour in lots of different places, around different distractions, and at different levels of difficulty.
Think of it like learning to drive.
You wouldn’t expect someone to go straight from an empty car park to driving through a busy city centre.
Dogs need the same gradual progression.
If your dog struggles when you take training out into the real world, don’t assume they’re ignoring you.
Ask yourself:
Have I made this too difficult, too quickly?
What’s something your dog can do brilliantly at home but struggles with elsewhere?
