Your dog’s training won’t look the same in every environment.

A cue your dog can do perfectly in the house may suddenly fall apart when there are people, dogs, smells, traffic, wildlife or food around.

That’s completely normal.

Training isn’t just teaching the behaviour. It’s teaching the behaviour in lots of different places, around different distractions, and at different levels of difficulty.

Think of it like learning to drive.

You wouldn’t expect someone to go straight from an empty car park to driving through a busy city centre.

Dogs need the same gradual progression.

If your dog struggles when you take training out into the real world, don’t assume they’re ignoring you.

Ask yourself:

Have I made this too difficult, too quickly?

What’s something your dog can do brilliantly at home but struggles with elsewhere?

Train the dog you have. Not the dog you wish you had.

Every dog is different: different personalities, different strengths, different challenges.

The more you work with your dog, rather than against them, the easier training becomes.

Progress comes from understanding the dog in front of you.

What’s something your dog finds easy… and something they find harder?

Did you know that dog’s may lip lick when they are unsure or yawn when they are stressed? If you know this it’s very easy to assume a dog is stressed if you see one of these signs, but they may also be doing it for other reasons.

It’s important we consider dog’s body language in its entirety not individual signs.

What stress signs do you sometimes see in your dog?
