Northumberland College Zoo With over 150 species of animals including lemurs, meerkats, wallabies, alpacas, armadillos, reptiles and much more!

Northumberland College Zoo opened in May 2011. The zoo is part of Northumberland College's Kirkley Hall Campus and was set up as an educational training facility for the college’s Animal Care students as well as becoming a tourist attraction on weekends and school holidays. Since opening the zoo has grown massively and now boasts over 150 species of animals, reptiles and birds including alpacas, ring tailed lemurs, marmosets, wallabies, kookaburras, snakes, lizards and smaller domestic animals in our petting barn. Visitors can meet our zookeepers, enjoy various animal encounters and even have the opportunity to hold reptiles and domestic animals when activities are available. In 2013 the zoo was awarded a prestigious TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award for consistently achieving outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. The zoo has a full zoo licence, is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has links with various partners to actively promote the conservation of animals including the Wildlife Trusts, Red Squirrels Northern England and Newcastle University. As well as being a great family day out the aim of our dedicated zoo team is to educate people about the various species of animals we have and their behaviours and habitats.

🌽🐵 Fancy helping us out with a citizen science research project??

A student from Newcastle University is conducting a project to look at the behaviour of our Emperor Tamarins- Titch and Yzma- and we need your help!

Whilst visiting the zoo, and exploring the Walk of Life, scan the qr code and take a few minutes to observe the behaviour of our Emperor Tamarins- it’s really simple to do and your responses contribute to real research data to improve the welfare of animals at our zoo. 🐒

The qr code contains all the information you need, so please have a go when you next visit!

This week BIAZA are celebrating all things small but mighty! 💪

Check out our Phantasmal Poison Dart Frogs- one of the smallest creatures we have at the zoo 🐸

These tiny frogs are native to Ecuador, in the wild they consume insect prey which contain toxins- the frogs then sequester these toxins, not at any harm to them, but making them extremely toxic to anything that might try to eat them! ☠️

But do not fear, in captivity the insects we feed are not toxic, meaning the frogs are not poisonous and no threat to the keepers!

Join us this half term for a week packed with spooky family fun! 👻

🎨 Monday–Wednesday: Get creative with Halloween crafts in the Discovery Room.

🦉 Monday & Tuesday: Visit the RSPB stall and discover more about local wildlife and conservation.

🧙‍♂️ Thursday & Friday: Raggy Potter will be with us throughout the day, bringing magical activities and fun for all ages.

🕸️ All Week: Take part in our Halloween Trail and see if you can solve all the spooky clues around the zoo!

We’re looking for confident friendly people to join our team to work with our placement learners who we support during the week on placements and home education sessions

We’re looking for people who have previous experience working with volunteers and supported placements in a commercial setting and who are confident working with our guests and groups of children and our very own students here at the college.
