Northumberland College Zoo

Northumberland College Zoo With over 150 species of animals including lemurs, meerkats, wallabies, alpacas, armadillos, reptiles and much more!

Northumberland College Zoo opened in May 2011. The zoo is part of Northumberland College's Kirkley Hall Campus and was set up as an educational training facility for the college’s Animal Care students as well as becoming a tourist attraction on weekends and school holidays. Since opening the zoo has grown massively and now boasts over 150 species of animals, reptiles and birds including alpacas, r

ing tailed lemurs, marmosets, wallabies, kookaburras, snakes, lizards and smaller domestic animals in our petting barn. Visitors can meet our zookeepers, enjoy various animal encounters and even have the opportunity to hold reptiles and domestic animals when activities are available. In 2013 the zoo was awarded a prestigious TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award for consistently achieving outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. The zoo has a full zoo licence, is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has links with various partners to actively promote the conservation of animals including the Wildlife Trusts, Red Squirrels Northern England and Newcastle University. As well as being a great family day out the aim of our dedicated zoo team is to educate people about the various species of animals we have and their behaviours and habitats.

Tomorrow is World Parrot Day, and our resident macaws, cockatoo and lorikeets are helping us raise awareness and funds for

Join us this weekend for:

🌿 Free parrot-themed arts and crafts, helping us build a rainforest tree filled with visitor creations and parrot facts.

📚 Bird-themed Discovery Room sessions from 2pm–3pm on both days. Have a go at identifying feathers, dissecting owl pellets, making a parrot mask, and discovering more about native birds and members of the Psittaciformes (parrot) family.

🗳️ Vote for your favourite macaw or cockatoo at the food kiosk.

🦜 Support parrot conservation by purchasing a macaw adoption pack from our gift shop or picking up a World Parrot Trust wristband. Every purchase includes a donation to the World Parrot Trust.

🎤 Keep an eye on our What's On boards for special parrot-themed keeper talks running throughout the weekend!

We look forward to celebrating these colourful, intelligent birds with you while raising awareness for parrot conservation around the world. 💚

We recently welcomed another baby Goeldi’s monkey to our growing family! 🐒

This is Bamboo and Rosa’s third baby! The family are doing amazingly and it’s wonderful to see how the youngsters interact and play with each other.

Goeldi’s monkeys are threatened in the wild, so every baby born is important to support the conservation of this species. 🐵

Did you know zoos and aquariums contribute to over 1200 conservation projects!

Come along and see all of our animals, we are open every day this week 10am-4pm!

BIAZA Love Your Zoo week is coming up soon!

Between 25 – 29 May, join us as we celebrate this annual event on what makes zoos so special for visitors, wildlife, and conservation 💚

For example, DYK that last year, BIAZA zoos and aquariums undertook over a thousand conservation projects across the globe?

Why not support us for Love Your Zoo week, so we can continue to help reverse nature depletion 🌍
