βοΈπΆ HOT WEATHER DOG SAFETY πΆβοΈ
The warmer weather is lovelyβ¦ but for dogs, heat can turn dangerous very quickly. Dogs canβt cool themselves down like humans can, and heatstroke can happen frighteningly fast.
At Ruff & Woof at The Paddocks weβve tried to make the park as safe and comfortable as possible during the hotter days by providing:
π§ Multiple water stations around the park
π A water play area for splashing, cooling off, and soggy zoomies
πΏ mains water, for showers
A few important reminders for all owners during warm weather:
π Keep cars cool before travelling
Cars heat up incredibly fast β even with windows cracked open. Please cool the car before your dog gets in, use air conditioning where possible, and never leave dogs unattended in vehicles. βοΈβ‘οΈπ₯΅
πΎ Think about the activity level in the park
Hot weather is not the best time for intense exercise. Consider reducing high-energy games such as:
β’ repetitive fetch
β’ frisbee games
β’ chasing boomer balls
β’ constant sprinting activities
Instead, let your dog enjoy more sniffing, exploring, paddling, resting in the shade, and having a slower, more leisurely walk around the park. Sniffy strolls still count as enrichment πβοΈ
π§ Be mindful of water intake too
While hydration is extremely important, some dogs can drink excessive amounts of water very quickly when playing, especially when chasing sprinklers, hoses, or repeatedly biting at water. This can, in rare cases, lead to water intoxication (water toxicity), which can be very serious.
Signs can include:
β’ vomiting
β’ bloating
β’ lethargy
β’ loss of coordination
β’ glazed eyes
Offer regular breaks and encourage steady drinking rather than frantic gulping during intense play.
πΎ Watch for signs of overheating:
β’ excessive panting
β’ drooling
β’ wobbling
β’ vomiting
β’ lethargy
β’ collapse
π₯ What to do if you suspect heatstroke:
β’ move your dog into shade immediately
β’ offer cool (not ice-cold) water
β’ pour cool water over paws, belly, and body
β’ use airflow from a fan/car air conditioning
β’ contact a vet immediately β heatstroke is an emergency
Please do NOT use ice baths or freezing water, as cooling too quickly can cause additional problems.
We also have a cooling mat, situated in Barkingham Palace, feel free to use as needed, but please do not allow your pup to chew, bite or rip the mat.
πΎ Remember β if the ground is too hot for your hand, itβs too hot for paws! Pavements can turn into tiny frying pans. Natureβs version of βfloor is lava.β π₯πΎ
Please keep sessions shorter if needed, take plenty of breaks, and let your dogs cool themselves naturally. A tired dog is good⦠a heat-stroked dog is an emergency.
π‘οΈ If temperatures become too high and your dog is struggling to cope in the heat, please contact us. We would much rather help reschedule your booking for the safety and wellbeing of your dog than risk them becoming unwell.
