📢 Holiday Notice

Next week Andrew and I are on holiday.

The vets will be running as normal, but as many of you know, I usually close the pet shop when I’m away. This time, however, the shop will remain open on selected days.

To make things easier for the students/nurses who have kindly offered to keep the shop running for me while I’m away, we will be accepting cash only during this period.

Opening days:
✅ Monday 16th – Open
❌ Tuesday 17th – Closed
✅ Wednesday 18th – Open
✅ Thursday 19th – Open
✅ Friday 20th – Open

If you’d like to stock up before I go away, pop in this Friday.

Thank you for your support, and we’ll see you when we’re back!

Meet Prince!

Prince recently came into Staffordshire Vets after returning from holiday with an unwanted souvenir... a tick!

Fortunately, Head Veterinary Nurse Tony and the team were on hand to remove the hitchhiker safely using a tick twister. These handy tools help us remove ticks cleanly and reduce the chance of leaving mouthparts behind in the skin.

Did you know?

Ticks are not insects — they're actually arachnids, making them relatives of spiders.

They feed on blood and can attach to dogs, cats, wildlife and even humans.

Ticks are often picked up in long grass, woodland areas and heathland, but they can also be found in parks and gardens.

It's important to remove ticks promptly, as they can carry diseases such as Lyme disease.

Regular parasite prevention can help reduce the risk of ticks attaching to your pet.

If you find a tick on your pet, try not to squeeze it, pull it straight out or cover it in substances such as petroleum jelly. Using a proper tick removal tool is usually the safest and most effective option.

Thankfully, Prince was a very good boy throughout and was soon back to enjoying life tick-free!

Have your pets ever brought home any unexpected holiday souvenirs? Let us know in the comments!

Meet Jimmy!

Jimmy visited Staffordshire Vets yesterday for his castration procedure and was an absolute superstar throughout his stay with us. From admission to recovery, he was a lovely patient and quickly won over the team.

Cat castration is one of the most common procedures we perform. It is carried out under a general anaesthetic and is a relatively quick operation, allowing most cats to return home the very same day.

Did you know?

Castration can help prevent unwanted litters and may reduce behaviours associated with testosterone, such as roaming, urine spraying and fighting with other cats. By reducing roaming behaviour, it can also help lower the risk of injuries sustained away from home.

After surgery, most patients are back to their usual selves surprisingly quickly, although owners are often advised to keep an eye on activity levels for a few days (easier said than done with some cats!).

Jimmy recovered beautifully from his anaesthetic and was soon ready to head home for some well-earned fuss and relaxation.

Thank you for being such a good boy, Jimmy!

Meet Cosmo!

Cosmo, a handsome Domestic Shorthair, came into Staffordshire Vets after his owner noticed that the end of his tail had been damaged.

Unfortunately, the injury was severe enough that the affected section of tail could not be saved, so our veterinary team performed a tail amputation to remove the damaged tissue and take the tail back to a healthy, safe point where it could heal comfortably.

Tail amputations are performed under general anaesthesia, allowing the procedure to be carried out safely and painlessly. The remaining tail is carefully closed and protected to give the best possible chance of a smooth recovery.

Did you know?

A cat's tail contains bones, nerves, muscles and blood vessels, making it much more than just an ornament! Cats use their tails for balance, communication and expressing emotion. Thankfully, most cats adapt remarkably well after a partial tail amputation and quickly return to their normal activities once healed.

Cosmo was a wonderful patient and recovered beautifully from his anaesthetic. In fact, he has since been in for one of his free post-op checks and is thriving! He was strutting around the consult room as though he knew how amazing he was!

We wish Cosmo a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him at his next post-operative check.

Meet the handsome Copia!

Copia visited Staffordshire Vets this week for his castration procedure, and we're pleased to say he was an absolute gentleman throughout his stay with us. Just look at those striking eyes!

You may have noticed that Copia has two different coloured eyes. This is known as heterochromia, and it occurs when the amount of pigment differs between the eyes during development.

Heterochromia is particularly common in white cats, like Copia. The genes responsible for white coat colour can sometimes affect the distribution of pigment in the eyes, resulting in one blue eye and one eye of a different colour, such as green, yellow or amber.

Did you know?

Heterochromia isn't unique to cats? It can also be seen in: Dogs (particularly breeds such as Huskies, Border Collies and Great Danes), Horses, Cattle, some bird species and even humans!

One thing many people don't know is that some white cats with blue eyes can be born deaf, although this isn't always the case and many live perfectly normal, happy lives.

Copia was a wonderful patient and is at home recovering, where we're sure he'll be enjoying plenty of fuss and attention.

Does your pet have different coloured eyes? We'd love to see them! Please post them below :)

Just look at these two beautiful guinea pigs!

They came into Staffordshire Vets recently to see Tony and Mia for a nail clip, and we have to say they were absolutely wonderful patients from start to finish.

Many pet owners find nail clipping a little daunting, and we completely understand why. It can be particularly tricky when pets have dark or black nails, making it difficult to see where the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail) ends.

The good news is that we're happy to help!

We offer nail clipping for most species, from guinea pigs and rabbits to birds, reptiles, cats and dogs. Whether you're worried about doing it yourself or your pet simply isn't keen on having their feet handled, our team is here to help keep those nails at a comfortable length.

Of course, it always makes our job a little easier when patients are as well-behaved as these two gorgeous guinea pigs!

Some of you may remember Maggi the Shih Tzu, who has featured on our page before! 💕

This lovely girl was back with us today to have a lump removed under general anaesthesia.

As always, Maggi was an absolute sweetheart. In fact, she was so excited to see everyone who walked into the kennel area that we moved her to a lower kennel to make it easier for her to greet her admirers safely!

We're pleased to say that Maggi has now gone home to continue her recovery, complete with pain relief to keep her comfortable.

Did you know that our routine surgical procedures include two complimentary post-operative nurse checks?

These appointments allow us to:
● Check how the wound is healing
● Monitor your pet's recovery
● Answer any questions you may have
● Hear how your pet has been getting on at home

They are a great opportunity for owners to discuss any concerns and for us to make sure recovery is progressing as expected.

We hope you're feeling better soon, Maggi! Thank you for being such a wonderful patient, as always!
