Not all dental products are created equal!
Following our recent post about the importance of looking after your dog's teeth, we wanted to explore something many owners ask about.
Which dental products actually work?
There are hundreds of dental chews, toothpastes and supplements available, all promising healthier teeth and fresher breath. But how do you know which ones are worth choosing?
We've been doing a little homework at Paws on Paris, looking beyond the packaging and advertising to consider:
πΎ Evidence: Is there independent evidence that the product helps reduce plaque or tartar?
πΏ Ingredients: What's actually in it, and is it suitable for regular use?
β€οΈ Safety: Is it appropriate for your dog's size, age and individual needs?
π Responsibility: How transparent is the manufacturer about its ingredients and sourcing?
One useful thing we've discovered is the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), which recognises products that meet its standards for plaque or tartar control.
We've also identified four products that we'd like to explore further, including specialist toothpaste, two different dental chews and a seaweed-based supplement.
Before recommending anything, Tanya wants to try them as part of the existing dental-care routine with her own two Boxers. Because at Paws on Paris, we believe a recommendation should be based on more than a clever advert or attractive packaging.
Our advice for now? Brush every day, choose dental products carefully and regularly check your dog's teeth and gums.
We'll share what we learn as we go. ππ
NB. Dental products support home care but don't replace veterinary dental examinations or treatment.
