First Light Success from Germany: ODK12Tr

Performing spectacular in Just 90 Minutes! We love seeing our instruments out in the wild delivering world-class results. Long-time Astro photographer Mr. Rolf just sent over his initial setup configuration and first impressions of his brand-new ODK12Tr Truss Optimised Dall-Kirkham Telescope, imaging from Stuttgart, Germany.
Facing far-from-ideal urban seeing conditions and a tight 1.5-hour cloud window, the ODK12Tr went to work on the iconic Ring Nebula (M57). The results? Immediate resolution of fine deep-sky structures that his previous commercial telescope simply couldn't extract. "The telescope is amazing, featuring a great combination of optical quality and mechanical craftsmanship...

Mechanically, the carbon truss structure is very robust, and everything is well thought out. A beautiful instrument!

"Built with hand-figured UK optics, an integrated 3-lens multi-coated corrector, and a thermal-safe carbon fibre sandwich truss frame, the ODK12Tr is engineered to maximize every single second of clear sky. Thank you for the incredible feedback, Rolf! Clear skies! 🛰️✨🌐 Explore the custom-built Truss ODK range online today: https://www.orionoptics.co.uk/odktr-truss-telescope-series-orion-optics-oouk/

We love anything optics here and do take in some antiques now and then. Another happy customer.

I approached John at Orion Optics after several refusals from less specialized camera companies who either declined the work or were uncertain as to whether the task could be carried through to completion.
My commission was unusual – the repair of a condensing/collector lens on a Cooke, Troughton & Simms “Pointolite” lamp (to be found on p. 183 of the large hardback Cooke Microscopes promotional catalogue) dating to the 1950s and used to provide Koehler illumination for a large and well-specified mono/binocular black enamel M2000 research microscope of the old-fashioned inclining type. Internal fogging/spotting of the collector lens was the only optical defect in the system and it did not seem economical to purchase an entire modern outfit to compensate for a single fault.
Orion Optics not only fulfilled completely the task set before them, with near perfect light transmission and qualitative full diffuse illumination of the specimen field by the image plane produced by the repaired lens, but identified and corrected dirt accumulating on the nearly 60 year old iris diaphragm to prevent damage to a probably irreplaceable part. A light cosmetic cleaning completed the work to a “museum” standard.
Turnover rapid and fees extremely generous, no problem handling work for an amateur bryologist/pteridologist without relevant professional accreditation and outside of the declared specialism of the company.
I cannot recommend highly enough.
I am,
Very faithfully yours,
Patrick Joseph Gray

We should share customers reviews more often, here is one which arrived over the weekend.

I recently bought a from you, and just thought I'd share a few observations with you.

Firstly, the mechanical quality of the OTA. It is absolutely excellent. I collimated the scope when I first got it, mostly as an exercise in getting familiar with the OTA. It has been on and off the mount at least 10 or 15 times since, and the collimation has not moved in any detectable way. The focuser holds a 1.5kg imaging train without the slightest sign of flexure, and adding an electronic focus motor was very simple.

The mirror is astounding. The contrast it delivers is phenomenal, and the tube cools down quickly and evenly thanks to the fan arrangement and the carbon fibre tube. I've used a large number of Newtonians over the years, and the images this one delivers are absolutely first class.

So, I'm an extremely happy customer! I'll definitely be back at some point for something that will go in suitcase - maybe an 8"?

I've not had much imaging time with the setup yet (clouds and life intervene!), but I've attached a few that I'm quite pleased with.

(Please feel free to use any of these comments however you wish)

All the best, and thanks once again!

Kind regards,

Mr J Rippington
