Last week we had a fabulous group of teams come and do their first club Scent Ops Trial and they all did absolutely amazing!

It was great to be back judging a bronze and silver level Scent Ops in a beautiful old church in the heart of the surrey hills.

Bronze
The area started in the internal reception porch and then moved the right side of the church with rows of chairs. Dogs then searched along the front of the church and back up the left side with rows of chairs and a font area.

The first hide was located at the beginning of the search on the front door hinge in the corner. This posed a challenge for many teams who skipped this section. Once dogs were tasked to the area the hide was worked in well.

The second hide was on a stand at the front of the church behind a pillar. Many dogs skipped this area on first pass as they cut the corner but once they searched the area located the hide well..

Silver
The area was the whole church including an adjoining kitchen.

The first hide was hidden up under a bench in a corridor space at the back of the church. Some dogs rushed though this section into the kitchen area but those who searched problem solved to source well.

The second hide posed more of a challenge. It was at the front of the church in the middle section of chair pews up under a rail. Dogs picked up odour from both sides and had to work hard to get to source. Super problem solving was seen with teams working together to locate.

It was a pleasure to see such awesome teams tackle the searches in different ways. It was also lovely to welcome new teams to Scentops today with some great NFC searches too. Congratulations everyone!

What a season we have had! Our members won all 4 national ScentOps leagues 🥳

ScentOps is operational style searching where dogs search large complex areas for their target odour.

Hides become more complex in the higher levels where they may be inaccessible.

The area started in the internal reception porch and then moved into the back of the church along a corridor and opened out into a relaxation area and then extended down the side of the church with chair pews.

The first hide was located on the bottom of a trolley at the back of the reception area. Dogs picked up odour and most worked in first time. Others returned to the area at the end of the search to locate.

The second hide was on a table in the far corner of the search area behind the chair pews. Dogs picked up odour on the left side of the church where the odour pool moved along the wall at the back of the pews. Dogs worked this in well with a little problem solving required.

Silver
The area was the whole church including an adjoining kitchen.

The first hide was a slightly inaccessible hide behind some boxes under a bench along the back of the church. Dogs hit odour and then had to get as close to source as possible and indicate.

The second hide was at the front of the church in a sermon stand. This hide required some problem solving as dogs hit odour and then needed to go round the back to source. Some super problem solving here from the dogs and great teamwork shown where handlers recognized dog was in odour and tasked round the back of the stand if they missed it.

The standard was really high today! It was great to see some new teams join our ScentOps trial and some debut entries in silver.
