October equine area visits are here 🐴🍂

With autumn well under way and the days getting shorter, now’s a good time to get a few things ticked off before winter arrives.

Whether your horse is due a flu booster, dental check or routine appointment, our zoned visits make it easier to stay on top of their care while keeping visit costs down.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on changing grazing conditions at this time of year, particularly for horses prone to laminitis as autumn grass can still catch you out.

Equine Tapeworms

Tapeworms in horses live in the ileocecal junction between the small & large intestines and the caecum. They attach onto the gut wall and live off the food that the horse eats. This attachment can result in physical damage to the horse's gut causing diarrhoea, weight loss and colic.

Testing has shown that around 23% of horses tested actually have tapeworms. So, if we blanket treat every horse, we are not only wasting money but also giving our horses medications they really don't need. We recommend a specific test for tapeworms (as the standard worm egg counts don't pick them up). Autumn is a good time of year to check for tapeworms as horses pick them up from a mite present in the soil and grass over the summer grazing season. This test is called an EquiSal. It's a saliva test where you put a small swab in the side of your horse's mouth where the bit sits and collect saliva to send away for testing.

If your horse has a positive result there are tapeworm only wormers that we can supply, or if they need worming for strongyles as well than we can recommend appropriate mixed action products depending on the time of year.

Thank you to everyone who came along to Mary's talk on jumping up on Monday evening. It was lovely to see a room full of people giving up their evening to learn a bit more about their dogs.

Mary talked through why dogs do it, how to stop it becoming a habit and what you can do to start turning it around. There were some great questions at the end too, which is always our favourite part of these evenings.

We hope everyone went home with something they can start putting into practice.

The puppy who thinks your hands are chew toys? That one’s next. 🐶

First up was jumping up. Now our certified canine behaviourist Mary Howat is turning her attention to puppy biting – why puppies do it, what their behaviour is telling us and what you can do at home to help.

Join Mary on Monday 28 September at our Kirriemuir branch. Doors open at 7.15pm and the talk runs from 7.30pm to 9pm, with tea, coffee and plenty of time afterwards for your questions.

These evenings are free to attend, though there’ll be a donation box for our charity of the year, Mission Christmas.

It’s just for the humans again, so your four-legged friend can enjoy the night off. 🐾

Jumping up to say hello is cute when they're tiny. Less so when they're full grown and knocking people off their feet.

It's one of the most common things people ask Mary about, and it's rarely a badly behaved dog. Usually it's a dog who's delighted to see you and has never been shown another way to say so.
