I AIN’T REALLY MISBEHAVING - I’M JUST DOING WHAT DOGS DO!

What we may label as bad behaviour is often nothing more than a dog behaving exactly as nature designed them to.

Dogs are not born understanding human rules, household etiquette or the expectations we place on them.
They don't automatically know that some things are not meant to be chewed, that food left on a countertop is strictly off-limits or that they’re expected to walk calmly on a leash.

When we bring dogs into our lives, we expect them to automatically adapt to a world that is not naturally theirs.
We confine them to houses and yards, expect them to fit into our busy schedules, keep quiet and ignore the countless natural temptations that surround them every day.

When we view behaviour through this lens, frustration should begin to give way to understanding.

Understanding behaviour does not mean allowing dogs to do whatever they want. It means recognizing that behaviour serves a purpose and is fulfilling a need.

Instead of punishing a dog for behaving naturally, we can guide them towards behaviours that are acceptable. We can prevent rehearsal of unwanted behaviour, teach new skills, meet their physical, emotional and social needs, and provide appropriate outlets for their natural needs.

Dogs who are given opportunities to sniff, explore, chew, forage, play, problem-solve and engage with their environment are far better equipped to cope with the expectations placed on them.

The more we understand why dogs do what they do, the more successful we can become at helping them navigate our human world.

When we stop viewing every unwanted behaviour as misbehaviour and start seeing it as communication, we shift from trying to control our dogs to supporting and meeting their needs.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our dogs is our understanding.

🚙 Travelling with your dog? This could make your next road trip a whole lot easier!

Did you know that ALL official UK motorway service stations now allow dogs inside designated areas, meaning you no longer have to leave them in the car while you nip to the bathroom? Quite a turnaround from travel a few years ago! 🤩

The catch is that every operator has slightly different rules, so knowing exactly where your dog is welcome isn't always straightforward.

After spotting some recent (and very welcome!) changes at Tebay, I’ve put together a complete guide showing where dogs are allowed inside at every motorway service station across the UK 🩵🐾

A handy one to save for your next adventure!

🚙 MOTO: Dogs allowed in main thoroughfares and toilets
🚙 WELCOME BREAK:: Dogs allowed in indoor seating areas and toilets
🚙 ROADCHEF: Dogs allowed in main thoroughfares and toilets as a minimum (may vary by location)
🚙 EXTRA: Dogs allowed in main thoroughfares, indoor seating areas and toilets
🚙 WESTMORLAND: At Tebay (Southbound), Cairn Lodge and Gloucester Services, dogs are allowed in the foyer and toilets. In Tebay (Northbound) there is also now a designated dog-friendly indoor seating area!

Note that (with the exception of assistance dogs) dogs aren’t officially allowed into cafes, catering outlets or shops at any service stations. Some Costa Coffee outlets ARE dog friendly though and you can check ahead on the store locator on their website which shows the ones where dogs are allowed inside 🐾

Where’s your favourite place to stop when you’re travelling on the motorway?

While some of us love this hot weather our dogs do not, keeping them cool and in the shade is a must . But why not try short training sessions to teach a new trick or two 🐾

Something we should all be very aware of , missing a walk never killed our dogs but this heat can 🐾

☀️🐾 HEATWAVE WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS THIS WEEKEND 🐾☀️

Yeah… they are not exaggerating this one.

The UK is heading into a genuinely unusual late-May hot spell, with some parts of England expected to reach 32–33°C over the Bank Holiday weekend. The Met Office has already warned this could challenge or even break UK May temperature records.

Expected temperatures:
🌡 Southern England & Midlands:
Saturday: 28–30°C
Sunday: 30–32°C
Monday: Up to 33°C in some areas

🌡 Wales & Northern England:
Generally 24–29°C

🌡 Scotland:
Still extremely warm for us — around 20–26°C, especially across central and eastern areas including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

And the important part?
This heat is expected to feel humid, heavy and muggy — which can actually make things even harder for dogs.

🚨 Dogs do NOT handle heat like humans do.

They cannot sweat to cool down properly.
They rely mainly on panting — and when humidity rises, that cooling system becomes far less effective.

Even when air temperatures look “manageable”, the real danger comes from:
🔥 Hot tarmac and artificial grass
🔥 Crowded events and demonstrations
🔥 Vehicles and travel
🔥 Long waits with little airflow
🔥 Kennels, crates and enclosed spaces
🔥 Excitement, stress and adrenaline

And sadly, every single year dogs in the UK suffer heatstroke — many during walks, events or exercise that owners believed would be “fine.”

⚠️ High-risk dogs include:
🐾 German Shepherds & Malinois
🐾 Working and retired service dogs
🐾 Older dogs and puppies
🐾 Brachy breeds
🐾 Dogs with anxiety, health or breathing issues
🐾 Thick-coated breeds

Please remember:
Just because an event is still running does NOT automatically mean conditions are safe for your individual dog.

Event organisers plan for the overall event.
YOU are responsible for your dog. 🧡

This weekend may need to become:
🌅 “walk at dawn or late evening” days
💧 Water absolutely everywhere
🚗 Avoid unnecessary vehicle travel
🌳 Shade and airflow constantly
🔥 Checking ground temperatures before every walk

And please be careful around rivers, lochs and open water too.
The weather may feel hot, but the water is still dangerously cold in many places. Sudden cold-water shock and exhaustion are real risks for both dogs and people.

⚠️ Signs of overheating:
▪️ Heavy panting
▪️ Excessive drooling
▪️ Bright red gums
▪️ Vomiting
▪️ Wobbling or collapse
▪️ Confusion or glazed eyes
▪️ Restlessness or distress

If your dog is struggling:
❄️ Move them to shade immediately
💧 Offer cool water little and often
🚿 Use cool water on paws, belly and body
📞 Contact a vet urgently

And honestly?
Sometimes the bravest thing a handler or owner can say is:
“Not today.”

There will always be another event.
Another training day.
Another walk.
Another weekend.

Your dog only gets one life.
Please protect it. 🧡🐾
