Home exercises really do make such a difference, however there is never a one-size-fits-all approach so please consult a physio before attempting any new exercises! It's also important to add that as your dog's needs/health changes, your dog's exercise plan should be reviewed.

We know that you are doing everything you can to help give
But always seek professional help before you start any treatment or therapy for your dog.

Arnie the cat showing his canine brother Fergus how it's done ๐Ÿคฃ

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. I'm having a break in Orkney until after New Year (well, apart from my parents cats & dog as above ๐Ÿ˜‚). But I'm still available to answer any questions or take bookings, for both existing clients and new clients (use WhatsApp, email or social media as I currently have no phone signal here) ๐Ÿพ

CUTE PUPPY ALERT ๐Ÿพ

I had the pleasure of meeting Strudel the Schnoodle yesterday for a puppy check ๐Ÿ˜ Her owners didn't have any particular concerns, but wanted to ensure they get her off to the very best start in life with a physio check ๐Ÿ’ฅ

After being a very good girl for her check over and some light massage, Strudel was in her element carrying out some proprioceptive exercises suitable for her age/stage of development. ๐Ÿพ Adding some of these exercises to her (already very impressive) repertoire of training tricks will improve her body awareness and help prevent injury in her active lifestyle going to work with her mum and dad ๐Ÿคฉ

๐Ÿ˜ This incredibly handsome duo came to me after their owner noticed that they sometimes had a bunny-hopping gait.

They have massage and manual therapy to ease any tight areas, and have started a home exercise plan to help correct gait, improve range of motion and strength. At only 1.5 & 3.5 years old, their owner is setting them up for the best musculoskeletal health and helping to prevent any future issues. ๐Ÿ’ช

Don't leave it until your dog goes lame before seeking advice - be proactive like Monty & Murphy's amazing mum! Prevention is always better than the cure.

๐ŸŽ‰ Shout out to Bob's fabulous owners who have been really consistent with doing his homework! ๐Ÿคฉ We've seen huge improvements in his flexibility as well as reducing muscular tightness between sessions. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ”ธI always ensure home exercises are achievable - not only for individual dogs, but for each client, fitting in with different busy lifestyles.

๐Ÿ”ธDoing your prescribed home exercises really do make all the difference... They aim to maintain (or improve) your dogs condition between treatment sessions.

๐Ÿ”ธDoing your exercises = happy dog = happy owner (and a happy physiotherapist!) ๐Ÿ˜.

๐Ÿ”ธDon't forget to WARM UP and COOL DOWN!๐Ÿ”ธ

What would happen if you jumped out of bed and went straight into a sprint without a little walk/jog first? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ (eeek my muscles hurt just thinking about it!).

This is similar to what our dogs are doing when we let them run off the lead (or at the end of a long lead) without a gentle warm up first. This includes chasing a ball in the garden, playing with other dogs, or going straight from the car to off-lead walkies.

Get in the habit of doing a 10-15 min walk on a short lead before & after any off-lead exercise. [If your dog is older/arthritic/has any conditions, or taking part in sports/working activities, they may require more specific warm up/cool down techniques - always best to consult a physio/rehab specialist.]

My dog is young, very active and loves to run, chase and play with other dogs. Every walk begins & ends with a slow walk on the lead (using treats to slow him down if necessary) which gradually builds in speed over 15 mins or so. In reality, all this means is we take the longer route to the park/woods/fields - an easy habit for us to implement! ๐Ÿพ

Following on from my post about pet steps last week... I cannot stress enough how important environmental modifications are!! Covering any slippery floors and limiting jumping by using steps/ramps or lifting on/off furniture can make such a difference - not only for arthritic pets (however it is extra important for them!), but for all pets!

Your dog maybe trying to 'learn how to live with the pain'!
But you can make this better for him! Ensure the environment around him is convenient for him to walk around and as 'exertion-free' as possible so that he doesn't have to bear the pain!
Rugs and ramps go a long way, because remember, is a multi-modal approach!
