Patient Feature: Colby’s road to recovery
When Colby’s appetite began to decrease and he became increasingly unwell over a two-week period, his owners knew something wasn’t right.
Following investigations at their local vets, Colby was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a serious illness. As his condition deteriorated, The Grange Veterinary Hospital arranged for him to be transferred urgently to our Small Animal Teaching Hospital, where our Internal Medicine team was waiting to receive him.
Colby was admitted for further investigations and treatment. As he became more unwell and struggled to breathe, he was transferred to our Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he received oxygen therapy and intensive supportive care.
Those first few days were incredibly worrying for his family. Our team worked tirelessly to support Colby, with regular assessments and updates to keep his owners informed.
Then, on the fourth evening, came some encouraging news: Colby was showing the first small signs of improvement. ❤️
Gradually, he began eating voluntarily and continued to improve. After eight days in hospital, he was well enough to return home to his family.
His owner, Nicci, recently shared a wonderful update with us. Since coming home, Colby has continued to thrive, gaining over 1.5kg and enjoying his favourite things again — playing with his brother, eating and watching the birds from his catio. 🥹🐈
