Here we have Alison and David from anaesthesia performing acupuncture on a Holstein cow

This cow has been showing symptoms similar to 'stringhalt' in equids which has not been responding to pain relief, and a neurological exam revealed that she has a neuropathy affecting her spine.
Although it is generally less explored than in other species, there is some evidence that acupuncture can be used as a complimentary therapy in chronic cases to aliveate symptoms.

Anesthesia were happy to take the case on and see over time if there is a positive effect!

Ram vasectomy ✂️

Here we have our vet Niall performing a vasectomy on a ram with the assistance of one of our students

A vasectomised ram, sometimes called a 'teaser ram' still shows normal breeding behavior but can't get ewes pregnant. This makes them incredibly useful during breeding season!

The procedure is relatively quick and can be performed in our hospital or out in the field

A slightly more unusual inpatient in our hospital today! 🐥🪺

If you find a fledging on the ground, the best course of action is to make sure that the bird is not obviously injured or not in immediate danger (traffic or pets nearby), and then leave the bird alone - this is a normal stage of bird development and most likely the parents are watching from nearby 🐦

Meet Ernie!

Ernie was referred to us at 12 weeks as a double cryptorchid, meaning his testicles had not descended into the sc***um and instead were still inside his abdomen.
In some species it can take several weeks or even months for the te**es to fully descend, but in goats if both testicles are not present at birth it is unlikely that they will descend later in life. However, castration is still recommended to prevent breeding and testicular cancers later in life

Our vet Gabe castrated Ernie under general anesthesia via a laparotomy, and now Ernie is recovering well back at home!

In recent days we've seen a few cases of heat stroke - please look out for the signs (open mouth panting, drooling, listless, unsteady on their feet) and be sure to provide shade and plenty of water while this heatwave lasts ☀️

A once in a blue moon type of referral! 🐖

Here we have Sybil, a kunekune who was struggling to give birth, which is very rare for pigs. By the time she had arrived at Leahurst hospital her cervix has closed so the only option was to perform a cesarian

The surgery was performed by our vets Rosa Ana and Corien, and anesthesia and piglet resuscitation was performed by our amazing anaesthesia team and students!

Seven healthy little piglets survived, and after a good few days of fuss and jam sandwiches, Sybil went home to enjoy being a mum

And now here is the lamb all healed up! The bandage was changed twice and then removed around 1 week after the surgery, and now the lamb is back on farm and pain free!

Since the joint was affected and the bone was already showing damage on radiographs, a digit amputation was performed by our vets Corien and Rosa Ana under sedation and intra-regional local anesthesia

The wound was then bandaged and the lamb was reunited with his mum for recovery!
