CIDRs were removed from these lovely shropshire girls today, followed by a PMSG injection to accelerate the breeding season and tighten the lambing window 💉 🐑

CIDRs contain a hormone called progesterone and are placed intravaginally for a set period. This mimics the progesterone dominant phase of the ewe’s cycle and helps bring the group to the same stage of their cycle.

Once the CIDRs are removed, progesterone levels fall. PMSG is given at removal to stimulate follicular development and help produce a more predictable, synchronised onset of oestrus and ovulation.

These ewes are in great condition, and are now ready to meet the tup 😍

A busy day in farm practice, travelling across the wirral to see lots of our clients on the road today. 🚐

Whilst out and about, we had the pleasure of treating a lovely Shropshire ewe aptly named coffee ☕️ as she resides at Benty Farm Tearooms.
Coffee has a sore on her foot, the dry ground and dry grass and thorns can cause abrasions and penetrative wounds which turn into abscesses. She is making a great recovery, and still being her cheeky self. 😜 🐑

While we were visiting, we just had to stop for a coffee in the tea rooms in honour of this lovely sheep - thank you Benty farm, it was absolutely lovely 😍

Happy world goat day! 🐐🥳
We are lucky enough to have lots of goats on our client base - from Pets to production animals - we love them all!

Today we celebrate these funny, inquisitive (and sometimes cheeky) escape artists.

Goats were one of the first animals to be domesticated by humans and were being herded 10,000 years ago (8,000 BC). We do sometimes wonder who tamed who though... we have definitely met some goats who rule the roost 😆

There were plenty of visitors who came to our University of Liverpool stand, in partnership with University of Liverpool - Small Animal Teaching Hospital - SATH , Leahurst Equine Hospital & Leahurst Equine Practice

Are your rams ready for tupping time? 🐏

Follow the five T's of tupping when you're checking the boys ahead of their busy season.💪

It is essential that they are fit and healthy to get a tighter lambing window, high scanning percentages and healthy lambs on the ground next lambing season 🐑

It can take up to 7 weeks for s***m production, so tups going in to the ewes in October will have started developing that s***m now! Anything that interferes with s***m production in the run up to tupping can have disastrous effects on the ram’s ability to impregnate ewes.

We offer a full tup MOT, including semen analysis.
We can also work with you on breeding programmes specific to your flock, including sync programmes for your ewes 🔬

🦟Bluetongue cases are rapidly increasing in the UK. Vets in the south west are reporting high a number of cases which seem more severe than last year with a greater number of animals affected. Cases are also on the rise across the whole of England and Wales. Although sheep are usually more severely affected vets are also seeing clinical signs in cattle.

Signs of blue tongue include:
🌡️high temperature
🩸sores in the mouth or on lips
🐑Drooling and lameness
🐄 swollen head or lips

☎️ It is notifiable so if you suspect a case it should be reported to APHA.

💉The best prevention is vaccination, we strongly recommend that you do this ASAP to protect your animals. Please ring us if you want to organize or discuss this.

Hi everyone!👋 I am Laura, and I have joined the Leahurst farm animal practice team as a new vet.

I recently graduated from the University of Liverpool, so some of you may recognise me from vet visits when I was a student.

I have previously worked on a variety of sheep systems, commercial pig farms and on a dairy farm so now I can't wait to start my veterinary career in farm animal practice.

I developed a strong interest in sheep medicine as a student, and enjoyed getting involved with a sheep lameness research project during my studies.

I have a small flock of sheep and a horse that keep me busy when I am not at work.

I can't wait to meet all our lovely clients properly, and share my love of farm practice with the students in September.

This week we will be saying goodbye to Kate! 👋🏻

Kate has worked in the practice since she joined as an intern in 2022 and stayed on to complete a residency in bovine health management. Although she's looking forward to 12 months of travelling after this, she will greatly miss all the clients and the huge variety of species that we treat at Leahurst, as well as all the students!

[And to break the fourth wall, not only have I loved caring for everyone's animals over the years but it's also been a pleasure showcasing them on our social channels! ]

Someone isn't happy about their lack of breakfast before his surgery! 🥣

Bowser came to us for an abdominal cryptorchid surgery after his testicles didn't descend - in other species it is normal to wait and see if the testicles descend into the sc***um however in pigs if this hasn't happened in their first week after birth it means it is unlikely to happen when they get older

Bowser is home and doing great!

Sometimes to get a good ultrasound image in a pic all you need is a well-timed belly scratch!
