Fresh from representing Great Britain and achieving another international podium finish at an FEI competition in France, Theo and George have returned home to this incredible news.
Their journey began when Theo was just eight years old and George was a three-year-old RSPCA rescue pony.
George gave a frightened young boy the confidence to love horses. Together, they developed a bond built on trust, patience and determination. That partnership carried them through an extraordinary dressage career in which they won 26 championship titles and represented England as part of the winning Home Nations squad in 2024.
Their goal was always bigger than winning rosettes. Theo wanted to challenge perceptions of rescue ponies and prove that success is not determined by where an animal’s story begins.
Then Theo outgrew George.
There were offers to buy George and opportunities for Theo to move on to larger ponies. But after everything George had given him, Theo would not leave his best friend behind. He turned down those opportunities and chose instead to find a way for their partnership to continue.
Inspired by watching Daniel Naprous, Boyd Exell and Dries Degrieck at the London International Horse Show, Theo decided that this would not be the end of their story. It would be the beginning of a completely new chapter.
Together, they took up carriage driving.
Since entering the sport in 2025, Theo and George have won numerous national competitions, represented Great Britain internationally and secured victory at their very first FEI international event.
In doing so, George became the first RSPCA pony registered with the FEI to win an international competition. Theo and George also became the first human-and-equine partnership to represent their country in two different equestrian disciplines: dressage and carriage driving.
But perhaps their greatest achievement is what their partnership has inspired beyond the competition arena.
George did not only change perceptions of rescue ponies. George changed Theo too.
The confidence, trust and belief that George gave him inspired Theo to offer the same opportunity to two more RSPCA rescue ponies, Jerry and Elvis. Both ponies have already gone on to achieve tremendous success in showing and dressage.
This is not simply a story about a young rider doing well with a pony.
It is the story of an unwanted rescue pony who gave a frightened child confidence, and a child who later refused to leave that pony behind. Together, they changed disciplines, represented their country twice and proved that rescue ponies can achieve extraordinary things when someone believes in them.
Their story shows that success is not determined by where you start. It grows from trust, loyalty, determination and an unbreakable partnership.
If you believe that rescue horses deserve recognition, and that partnerships like this should be celebrated, please vote for Theo and RSPCA George in the Horse & Hound Unsung Partnership of the Year Award.
