💩🪲 WE FOUND ANOTHER DUNG BEETLE! 🪲💩

Yes… you read that right. We’re celebrating poo! 😂

We’ve found another dung beetle here at Reaseheath Mini Zoo, and we couldn’t be more excited to add another record to Project DUNG! 🌱🪲

Project DUNG is a BIAZA campaign exploring the amazing world of our native dung beetles and how we can support these tiny but incredibly important invertebrates. The UK is home to over 50 species of dung beetle, but around a quarter are considered nationally rare or threatened.

Our very own Zoo Conservation Education Lead & Registrar, Nicole, is leading Project DUNG here at Reaseheath — turning something as ordinary as animal poo into an opportunity to discover and support native wildlife! 💩➡️🪲🌿

So, the next time you see a pile of poo… take a closer look! 👀 You might just find one of nature’s tiny recyclers hard at work.

Another beetle for the records! 🪲💚

☕️ YOUR COFFEE HAS A STORY… BUT NOT ALL OF THEM ARE HAPPY ONES. 🐾

It’s coffee day! ☕️ And while many of us enjoy our morning brew, today gives us the perfect opportunity to talk about a rather unusual coffee — civet coffee, also known as Kopi Luwak.

Civet coffee is made using coffee beans that have passed through the digestive system of a civet before being collected, cleaned and roasted. 🫘

But behind the unusual story is a serious animal welfare issue. The Civet Project reports that the industry can involve wild civets being captured, kept in small cages and force-fed coffee cherries, with serious consequences for their welfare.

So where do our civets come in? 🐾

Our civets aren’t directly involved in The Civet Project, but they play an important role as ambassadors for their wild counterparts.

Through our work with students and zoo visitors, our civets help us talk about the realities of the civet coffee industry, animal welfare, conservation and the importance of making informed choices as consumers. 🌿

Sometimes, conservation starts with simply knowing the story behind what we buy. 💚

☕️🐾 Next time you hear “civet coffee”, remember the animal behind the name.
