🍴 What diet should I feed my rabbit? πŸ‡πŸŒΏ

Contrary to popular belief, rabbits require a mainly hay diet, with only a small amount of rabbit nuggets/pellets and fresh greens alongside. But all hay is not the same! 🌾

βœ… Good hay should smell dry and sweet, have dust extracted, and have a mixture of visible seed heads and long crunchy stems. It should appear green in colour.
❌ Bad hay can smell damp or musty, will be dusty, and will have no visible seed heads. The colour may be more brown or yellowy.
βœ… Feeding hay is grown specifically for feeding, so it is very palatable and great for buns to chew on, promoting good dental health! It is typically low in sugar and high in fibre, making it an ideal healthy choice.
❌ Bedding hay is not ideal for a rabbit diet as it is often cheaply manufactured and can remain packaged for long periods. It has an unknown nutritional value and usually less tasty. It does however do a great job for bedding, unsurprisingly! It is comfy and well insulating during cold periods.

Enriching your rabbit's diet could be as easy as popping into the back garden 🌳🌿🌼 and it won't cost you a penny!

Take a look at these healthy, alternative ideas you could introduce to your buns- do you have any of these in your garden? πŸ‡β˜˜οΈ

If you and your rabbits are new to foraging:
🐰 Only feed your rabbits foraged plants from your garden if you do NOT use pesticides and if you are certain wild rabbits cannot gain access.
🐰 Introduce foraged plants slowly to avoid digestive upset.
🐰 If you aren't 100% sure what plan you are picking- don't feed it!
🐰 Feed forage in moderation alongside a balanced diet of hay, nuggets and water.

Meet Milo- isn't he handsome! He's 3 months old and already such a character πŸ˜πŸ‡

Vet Sadhana had the pleasure of meeting Milo at our West Moor branch recently, and after passing his general health check with flying colours they had a chat about getting him vaccinated. πŸ’‰
Milo's favourite hobby is sitting on the sofa watching telly, but he'd quite like try something new by spending some time outdoors! 🌀️ Now his owners can allow Milo to investigate the great outdoors safely and securely 🌿

As part of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) 🐰 we recommend getting your buns vaccinated to ensure they can live their best lives being happy, healthy and protected πŸ™ This consists of a single, yearly, combined injection (Myxo-RHD Plus) that protects against myxomatosis and two strains of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease (RVHD)- both diseases that most rabbits sadly do not recover from.

There is now the option for rabbits to receive a second vaccine, Yurvac RHD, which offers enhanced protection against the highly viral strains of RVHD. This can be given to your rabbit at least two weeks following the Myxo-RHD Plus. πŸ’‰πŸ°

Give us a call today if you have any further questions or concerns regarding rabbit vaccinations- or if you'd like to get booked in! πŸ“žπŸ‡

⚠️ We're sure you're all aware of the severe hot weather warnings that have been issued across much of the country this week. Here in Northumberland, temperatures are expected to rise higher than normal for both us and our pets. β˜€οΈπŸŒ‘οΈ

⚠️ ALL animals can suffer from heatstroke. Please take a moment to read the following information, look through the pictures below, and stay safe and sensible during the heatwave.

πŸ• DOGS πŸ•
πŸ”… NO dog walk is worth the risk of heatstroke- skip the midday walk. If you must go out, choose early morning or late evening instead when temperatures fall. This is especially important for flat-faced, overweight and older dogs.
πŸ”… Make sure they have access to shady areas of the garden and house, cold water at all times, and provide them with extra cooling aids if necessary such as cool mats, fans, ice cubes/frozen treats and paddling pools.
πŸ”…βŒNEVER leave your dog inside a parked car, under ANY circumstance.

🐈 CATS 🐈
πŸ”… Make sure your cat has access to shady areas of the garden and house, cold water at all times, and provide them with extra cooling aids if necessary such as cool mats, fans, frozen yoghurt treats or ice cubes.
πŸ”… White cats (and dogs) with pink ears and noses are highly susceptible to sunburn- keep them indoors during the hottest part of the day if likely to sunbathe. Pet-safe sun protection products are available.

πŸ‡ SMALL MAMMALS πŸ‡
πŸ”… Make sure both outdoor and indoor hutches/enclosures are not in direct sunlight- move them and cover with a sheet/towel if needed (do not obstruct air flow).
πŸ”… Ensure access to cold water at all times (bottles and bowls). Add ice cubes to bowls and use a fan in the room to promote airflow.
πŸ”… Try cooling down fresh greens in the fridge or freezer before serving them.

If you are concerned about your pet during the hot weather, please call us on 01670 512275 at any time for advice or in an emergency πŸ“ž

πŸŽ‰πŸ° It's Rabbit Awareness Week 2026! (RAW) πŸ°πŸŽ‰

RAW is an annual awareness event organised by the Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG) alongside Burgess Excel, with the aim of promoting better owner education about the health and welfare (and everything in-between!) of pet rabbits in the UK. πŸ‡

Rabbits are one of the UK's most owned, but least understood animals, and often end up living short and poor quality lives with incorrect feeding, lack of enrichment and inadequate healthcare. πŸ’” We'd love for this to change!

The theme for this year's RAW is 'feeding bunnies better'. πŸ₯¬πŸ₯’πŸŒΏ This week we aim to share some of our own content as well as some content from RAAG and Burgess about better feeding, but also many other things you can be doing to make sure your rabbit is living their best life! Hopefully with plenty of cute bunny photos along the way πŸ’š

Robson and Prescott is always happy to see your rabbit at any of our branch surgeries or the main hospital, for anything from routine health checks to vaccinations, or if they are showing signs of feeling unwell. We even have a dedicated small mammals hospital ward should your bunny require more intensive treatment and a longer stay with us. πŸ‡πŸ₯

Stay tuned this week for some hop-tacular bunny content! 🐰

It's that time again- the return of R&P craft club! πŸ–ŒοΈπŸ§ΆπŸͺ‘

For craft club number 5, we had a fantastic turn out for Sip 'n' Paint portrait night!πŸŽ¨πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ¨

Crafters brought along their tipple of choice (and ordered pizza, of course! πŸ•) then each chose a name out the hat to see who's portrait was to become their next masterpiece! πŸ–ΌοΈ As I'm sure you can imagine it turned out to be a hilarious night- but definitely uncovered some hidden artistic talent! 🎨

We hope you enjoy having a look at the finished paintings- do you recognise any of our staff members in any of their portraits?! πŸ‘€πŸ–ΌοΈ

See if you can spot our guest of honour, Cody, creating his own abstract piece! πŸ•

Until the next time, crafters! 🧢πŸͺ‘πŸ–Œ
