Ellie & Evie recently had the pleasure of visiting miniature Shetlands, Eric & Ernie, and couldn’t resist a photo!❤️

Despite being young, they were both very good boys for their routine appointment, and definitely win the award for smallest (& cutest!) patients of the week.🐴

A huge congratulations to Richard Cain, one of the brilliant farriers who visits our clinic, has just passed his Fellowship exams! 🎉👏🐴

Our farriers joins us at the clinic every 6 weeks, working alongside our vets to provide a multimodal approach to lameness cases, and we’re very lucky to have his expertise on hand.

We know how much hard work goes into preparing for Fellowship, so it’s fantastic to see all that effort pay off. It’s a thoroughly deserved achievement! 👏

🤕 If large blood vessels are damaged by a wound contact us as an emergency 🚨
The wound may bleed severely while you’re waiting for us to arrive. This can look like pumping, pulsing or spurting blood and we’ll likely advise you to apply an emergency pressure bandage to help stem the bleeding. Horses in significant pain may not tolerate having this bandage applied so don’t put yourself in danger and wait for us to arrive.

All wounds go through four stages of healing:

1. Haemostasis – Blood flow is reduced to create a blood clot 🩸

2.Inflammation – Cells move from the blood to the tissue to start cleaning the wound ❌

3. Proliferation – The wound starts to heal. New skin cells begin to grow from the outer edges of healthy wounds. Fibrous tissue then covers the wound’s larger areas to provide protection 🧬

4. Maturation – Newly laid down tissue strengthens over time 💪

During proliferation the delicate new skin cells can be damaged by products containing oils or alcohols which can delay healing.

Understanding these phases and how care may differ between each one can help make sure your horse’s wounds heal as quickly as possible while minimising complications.

🎉🥳 Congratulations to our very own Niki on her graduation and qualification as a Registered Veterinary Nurse!!! 🥳🎉

🤩 We’ve had a fantastic year with our animal care assistants flying through various exams and qualifying as RVNs (Registered Veterinary Nurse) or SQPs (Suitably Qualified Person)

Keep an eye out for a post coming up celebrating all our wonderful achievements with our nurses this year 🫶 We would truly be stuck without them!

🤔 Did you know that once symptoms of tetanus appear 73% of horses don’t survive. As part of and University of Nottingham’s new WoundWise resources we’d like to remind you of the importance of vaccinating your horse against tetanus 💉

Tetanus is a non-contagious disease caused by a bacteria commonly found in soil 🦠 It can enter the bloodstream through a wound and produces a powerful toxin which affects your horse’s nervous system.

Thankfully, vaccinations are a safe and effective way to prevent this.
If you horse gets a cut and they’re not vaccinated, contact us as soon as possible.

There are several factors that may mean you need to contact us about a wound. One of them is the location.

Wounds over joints and delicate areas often mean there are anatomical structures close to the surface of the skin that can be more prone to infection, scarring or delayed healing ❤️‍🩹
