Bluetongue outbreak ⚠️

❗Please read❗

The bluetongue virus outbreak continues to be a rapidly changing situation in the south of the country. Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of cases of bluetongue being diagnosed.

As there are delays in lab testing, the current number of premises with infected animals is likely to be underrepresented on the APHA website.

Last year, during the midge vector season, the cases seen in animals on farms generally showed milder symptoms, with only a few animals affected on each holding. This is not the case in the South West this year, as sheep are experiencing more severe clinical signs, similar to those previously seen in Europe, and unfortunately the mortality rates are much higher.

As a result of this changing situation, we would strongly encourage clients to discuss vaccination with us to help assess the risks that the bluetongue 3 virus is posing to your herds and flocks.

Although the midge is required to spread the virus from animal to animal, there is a possibility of it spreading to this area of the country not only by midge movement, but also through the movement of animals that are carrying the virus.

It is worth noting that there are no movement restrictions for animals on holdings that are confirmed positive or awaiting a diagnosis, making this a very possible way for the virus to travel to our area.
