A martingale collar is only as good as its fit.

Too loose, and your dog may still be able to back out of it. Too tight, and you’ve lost the comfortable, limited-control design a correctly adjusted martingale should provide.

When fitted correctly, the control loop tightens to a set point when tension is applied and relaxes again when that tension is released.

And one of the easiest things to check?
Those two points on the control loop shouldn’t be able to meet when the collar is engaged.

How does a martingale collar actually work?

I’ve had a few questions about this recently, so I thought it would be useful to show you.

A martingale is a limited-slip collar. When there’s tension on the lead, the control loop shortens and the collar tightens. When correctly fitted, how far it can tighten is limited.

This gives a little extra security for dogs who may be able to back out of a conventional collar, particularly our narrow-headed hounds. Release the tension, and the collar relaxes again.

Correct fit really matters, and a martingale isn’t designed as a tool to stop a dog from pulling.

🎃 Pumpkin in pumpkins. It had to be done

A little Halloween fun has arrived early at Snoods4Dudes.

I’ve made a small batch of these spooky snoods and they are all ready for the dogs who will be embracing Halloween next month.

Perfect for adding a bit of spooky fun without needing the full fancy dress. Because sometimes a snood is quite enough 😆

These won’t be going on the website so if you need one for spooky season, just send me a DM and I’ll sort the rest.

Lovely Dobby 🖤🤍

I first met Dobby at the North East Dog Festival last year, so it was really lovely to see him again at the Global Greyhound Walk today.

Even better, I got to give him his new bespoke Newcastle United collar, made especially for him.

I think you’ll agree he looks fab in his black and white stripes!

What a fab day at the Great Global Greyhound Walk in Hexham today 🐾

It was so lovely to meet so many gorgeous sighthounds and their lovely humans. Thank you for stopping by to say hello 😊

A huge thank you to all the amazing volunteers at Northumberland Greyhound rescue who put so much into making the day happen. It was brilliant ❤️

We had a little bit of rain (it is Northumberland after all! ☔️), but it didn’t stop a brilliant turnout. And here is a small selection of amazing photos from today — a superb selection of Mystical Mutts! ✨🐾

A huge thank you too to everyone who bought a snood, collar or lead today. Your support means so much and we’re so thankful to be part of such an amazing sighthound community.

So we have finally arrived home, ready for a glass of Prosecco, which we won in the tombola today! There were some super prizes! 🥂🎉

A little bit of magic is coming to Hexham this Sunday… ✨🐾

I’ll be joining Northumberland Greyhound Rescue for the Great Global Greyhound Walk at Tyne Green Country Park — and this year’s theme is Mystical Mutts.

I’ll be there with a small Snoods4Dudes stall, bringing along a selection of snoods, collars and leads for long necks, autumn walks and the cosy seasons ahead 😊

The walk starts at 2pm (please arrive by 1.45pm) and is followed by a fun dog show, sausage catch, truffle hunt, raffle, tombola and more.

It’s free to take part, and greyhounds, sighthounds and other breeds from a greyhound family are all welcome.
