What an awful wet winter weāve had! Itās been challenging to say the least, but spring is finally upon us. Really hoping for a little less rain and a lot more sun this year.
Weāve had a really busy weekend managing the land and getting it ready for summer. For those that are interested hereās a breakdown of how and why we do this.
Harrow (spring tynes down) lots of benefits - strips old grass away making way for new shoots, breaks up soil clumps to fill any hoof holes/poached areas, levels the land, airates the soil promoting grass growth and better drainage, spreads any winter poo.
Reseed two fields - using a bucked we spread grass seed on foot by hand reseeding sparse areas that have been either over grazed in the past or poached over winter, we used a traditional meadow mix including tall fescue, strong creeping red fescue, meadow fescue, Timothy and smooth stalked meadow grass. Canāt wait for our hay crop this year š¾
Roll - Compresses the new seed into the ground, smooths over and flattens any poached areas (gateways) splits grass shoots promoting grass growth.
