Willow and Kara came for a Snuffle Spot Montrose session today!

Two dogs sharing the same Snuffle Spot doesn't necessarily mean they'll enjoy it in the same way.

That's part of the fun.

Willow and Kara had their own private space to sniff, forage, explore and investigate, with no instructions about what they should do or where they should go next.

One might find something fascinating that the other completely ignores. One might want to investigate every corner while the other has a few firm favourites they keep coming back to.

And that's exactly how it should be.

Snuffle Spot isn't about completing all the activities. It's about giving dogs choice and discovering a little more about what they enjoy.

Minnie came for a special Snuffle Spot treat today!

There's been a pretty big change in Minnie's world recently with a new baby at home, so today was an opportunity for a little bit of time that was just for her.

A chance to get out, have a good sniff, explore and enjoy some one-to-one attention away from all the changes happening at home.

When a new baby arrives, it's naturally a huge adjustment for everyone โ€“ including the dog. Their routines may change, the house smells and sounds different, and their humans suddenly have rather a lot competing for their attention!

Giving your dog something enjoyable that's just for them can be a lovely addition during this time.

Today was Minnie's turn. No babies, no expectations โ€“ just a good old Snuffle.

Balach and Evie came along for a Snuffle Spot Montrose session today!

One of the lovely things about having two dogs visit together is seeing just how differently they can approach the same space.

They have exactly the same room to explore, the same activities available and the same opportunity to sniff โ€“ but each dog gets to decide what interests them and how they want to spend their time.

There are no exercises to complete and no particular order to do things in. They can forage, investigate, play, sniff the interesting smells left behind by previous visitors or simply have a good wander around.

Snuffle Spot is all about choice โ€“ and sometimes watching what your dog chooses teaches you something new about them too.

Fozzie was back at Snuffle Spot Montrose today!

Fozzie is another of our regular visitors, so he knows exactly what he's coming in for โ€“ a good sniff, plenty of exploring and the freedom to choose what he fancies doing.

That's what I love about seeing dogs come back regularly. Snuffle Spot isn't a one-off experience where they've "done it" once they've explored the room.

Every visit brings different scents, different things to investigate and sometimes completely different choices from the dog.

And Fozzie certainly seems to think it's worth coming back for!

Charlie was back at Snuffle Spot Montrose today!
By now Charlie knows exactly what happens when he comes through the door โ€“ time to get that nose working and see what there is to investigate.

That's one of the things I love about our returning dogs. The first visit can be spent working out what this strange new place is all about, but once they know the room is safe, they can arrive ready to explore.

And there's always something new to sniff. Different dogs have visited, activities have moved around and all sorts of interesting scents have been left behind.

Snuffle Spot isn't something dogs can only experience once. Every visit smells a little different when you experience the world through a dog's nose.

Snuffle Spot is about so much more than finding food.

When we think about enrichment, it's easy to focus on the treats hidden around the room. But for our dogs, there's an entire world in Snuffle Spot that we can't see.

Smell.

Dogs can pick up scent left behind by other dogs, humans and animals long after they've gone. So every visitor potentially leaves another little layer of information behind for the next dog to investigate.

And today's visitors certainly added some interesting smells!

Panda and Slinky the ferrets, along with Tonka and Steven the tortoises, came into Montrose for a photo shoot at the pet shop and couldn't resist having their own little exploration of Snuffle Spot while they were there.

So the next dogs through the door might discover something rather different from the usual doggy smells!

That's one of the reasons Snuffle Spot isn't simply a room where we scatter food.

It's a sensory experience.

Dogs are sniffing where others have been, investigating unfamiliar scents, exploring different textures, solving little problems and deciding for themselves what deserves further investigation.
We tend to notice what we can see.

Our dogs are discovering a whole world that we can't.

Oakley came for his first Snuffle Spot today โ€“ but the session wasn't just for him.

His owner had a few things she wanted some advice about, so while Oakley got busy sniffing, exploring and investigating the room, we sat down and had a chat.

And that's a big part of what I want Snuffle Spot to offer.

You're not simply booking a room full of enrichment activities and being left to get on with it. You have an experienced dog trainer there with you.

Maybe there's a behaviour you're unsure about. Perhaps something has changed recently. Or you just want to ask, โ€œIs this normal?โ€ or โ€œWhat would you do?โ€

Not everything needs a formal training session or a whole behaviour programme. Sometimes a relaxed conversation while your dog happily snuffles away is exactly what you need.

Oakley got the Snuffle Spot. His owner got the chance to pick my brain.

I think that's a pretty good deal for both ends of the lead!

Lovely Lumi was back at Snuffle Spot Montrose today.

Lumi is a gorgeous girl and, unsurprisingly, people are drawn to her. But there's something Lumi would really like everyone to knowโ€ฆ
She doesn't want you to touch her.
And that's okay.

Why do we feel that because a dog is cute, friendly-looking or standing near us, we automatically have the right to reach out and stroke them?

Some dogs love attention from strangers. Some tolerate it. Some find it uncomfortable or frightening. Lumi is very clear that she'd rather people kept their hands to themselves.

Her owner shouldn't have to repeatedly explain or apologise for that, and Lumi shouldn't have to escalate her behaviour before people listen.
So she now has a new coat which clearly tells people that she needs space and doesn't want to be touched.

One of the things we talk about a lot at Snuffle Spot is listening to the dog in front of us. We don't need every dog to enjoy being handled by strangers.

You can admire Lumi. You can tell her she's gorgeous. You can even tell her owner she's gorgeous.

You just don't need to touch her.

Sometimes the kindest way to say hello to a dog is to leave them alone

Imagine a place where your dog can simply be a dog.

A place where they can sniff, search, explore, climb, forage and investigate at their own pace, without the pressure of other dogs, busy parks or people walking past.

That's exactly what Snuffle Spot is.

Every session is private, so you and your dog have the whole space to yourselves.

Who is it for?

Pretty much every dog!

๐Ÿถ Puppies building confidence and exploring the world.
๐Ÿถ Adolescent dogs with energy to burn.
๐Ÿถ Senior dogs who enjoy gentle mental stimulation.
๐Ÿถ Dogs recovering from injury or surgery.
๐Ÿถ Dogs on restricted exercise.
๐Ÿถ Nervous or reactive dogs who benefit from a calm, private environment.
๐Ÿถ Dogs who simply love to sniff!

It's also a lovely opportunity for owners to ask questions. Whether you've got a new puppy, are looking for activity ideas, or just want to chat about your dog, I'm always happy to help while your dog explores.

๐Ÿ“… Sessions are available by appointment and can be booked easily through my website. Snuffle Spot is held at 56 Murray Street, Montrose (the old petshop)
