We are just about at breaking point.
We are crammed to capacity and we are exhausted, but the cries for help keep coming. We are drowning. Drowning in cats, in requests for help, in medical bills, in stress and sleepless nights. We really are in the midst of a cat crisis and we're worried that we can't stay afloat.
Cats come in much much faster than they are being adopted, most of them needing veterinary treatment - we donāt know how much longer we can sustain this. One vet bill for one month from just one of our vets was over 13k. Thatās not a typo! Ā£13,273.60. And we have 12 vets so thatās not the only bill.
What really keeps us up at night though? It's that itās all preventable.
Itās frustrating knowing people are still out there breeding their cats then handing out more unneutered kittens. The problem is spiraling out of control. Itās so much worse than you think. Every single day we are getting calls and texts and emails about stray cats, abandoned cats, cats giving birth in sheds, in gardens, in ditches. We canāt take them all and itās soul-destroying to choose. For every life we save, there are hundreds more that need help. What we do never feels like enough but we are running ourselves into the ground trying.
NEUTER. YOUR. CATS. Maybe you're thinking ābut we know that, everyone knows thatā. The problem is they don't. We have to neuter almost every cat that comes in, so where are all these people that know better?
What we too often hear is: āwe wanted our cat to experience motherhoodā or āwe let it happen so our kids could see kittens grow upā or āitās cruel to not let themā.
You know what is cruel? When those people expect us to pick up the pieces when their cat has complications in labour and things go wrong. When they canāt be bothered now the kittens are bigger and need homes. When their tom cat starts spraying on the walls and gets horrible injuries fighting and suddenly itās expensive and inconvenient. When weāre the ones left sobbing over kittens dying from preventable illnesses because people cared more about selling them quickly than making sure they were healthy.
Sometimes it's too much. We're running on fumes trying to nap between bottle-feeding kittens and the next emergency, and the calls donāt stop coming. Weāve had emergency enquiries for 6 cats (either pregnant or with a bunch of kittens) TODAY ALONE. But weāre hanging in there for the hundreds of cats already in our care and for the ones still waiting for our help. We really are doing our best.
