When temperatures rise, your dog’s safety comes first.

For welfare and safety, walks may be shortened, moved earlier or later in the day, swapped for enrichment visits, sniffy decompression sessions, or cancelled during warmer weather.

Decisions are based on temperature, humidity, shade availability, travel conditions, and the individual dog’s needs.

For owners:
Sniffy decompression walks are generally safer than high-intensity activities such as ball throwing, repetitive running, structured heelwork, arousal and physical exertion increase body temperature more quickly.

It is also important to remember that shaded woodland can still feel humid and stagnant, reducing a dog’s ability to cool themselves effectively.
Dogs who are already stressed, anxious, reactive, or highly aroused may overheat faster due to the additional physiological effects of stress on the body.
Safe transport is equally important during warmer weather, and careful attention is given to ventilation, airflow, air con may not reach boot of the car very well, and recovery time between walks.

Our morning outings have been making use of chilling in the shade with the company of others.

What a difference a day makes.
Parker's Canine Training
Safe Space Saturday

Sadly this poor tree was struck by lightning a very long time ago, it slowly became a safety issue and sadly we were left with no choice.

🐾 What Does a Dog Walker Really Do?

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a few snapshots from my dog walking days—not just to clear some space on my phone (!), but to show the heart of what this job is really about.

We’re often booked in because owners are busy, working, or unable to meet their dog’s needs that day—and we really respect the people who recognise that and make wellbeing a priority. That choice matters.

But walking dogs isn't just about getting from A to B.

Our role is to provide enrichment, choice, and freedom of movement—all key ingredients in supporting a dog’s emotional and physical health. That means:

Off-lead time wherever safe and possible

Long-line freedom for dogs in training or who can’t yet be off-lead

Harnesses (never collars or slip leads) to protect their body and comfort

Avoiding tools that restrict natural movement, like head collars, during their precious time outdoors

Matching dogs with the right walking buddies

And making sure every walk is about them, not just the clock

We don’t walk dogs shoulder-to-shoulder in tight groups. We don’t aim for miles without meaning. We focus on letting dogs be dogs—sniffing, exploring, connecting, and resetting.

We’re currently full, but if you’re looking for the right dog walker, I’ve put together a simple checklist in the comments to help you choose someone who prioritises enrichment and wellbeing. There are some brilliant walkers in the area.

Because one hour outside can change a dog’s whole day.

One of our favourite walks along the side of the Blorenge.
We always start and end with 10 minutes on lead just to warm up and cool down muscles. This is important anyway but especially after the van journey and now the lower temperatures.
Gruff is the newest member to the club, its brilliant for him to have such good role models to follow.

A very wet and windy walk in Blaenavon today.
Warm though!
Eric is in a coat as he's 10 and very slender.
The rest, 2 spaniel and a lab are young, active and don't stop moving are without coats.
It's 18.5 degrees, but even a long coated, well insulated breed can feel the a wind chill and the wet coat can increase heat loss.
We've a collection of different coats and different sizes and sometimes it's tricky to choose.
There's alot of variables to consider.
But the most important is getting them dried for the journey home. Especially long coats as they take longer to dry.
Personally I dont like leaving a drying coat on for the journey home as it may hinder mobility in the crate, it can trap moisture or cause over heating. We've temperature gauges in each crate but as we can't check the dogs I prefer to dry them as much as possible and use dry bedding.

Always keep on an eye on their behaviour during walks to make sure they're comfortable.

Thankfully on our wet Adventure Club Wednesdays we have Henry Wag drying towels to hand.
The favourite being the noodle glove towel. Because unlike the towels it doesn't drop and drag on the ground, so they can be dried off easier before they go into their crates, keeping the bedding inside the crates dry and comfortable for the drive home.

Today was a trip to the Skirrid, the dogs often choose their route... we often end up in the woods šŸ˜….
