Behind the scenes with Ivy ❤️

Most of the time when we post about Ivy, she’s relaxing or pottering around the garden but this is the bit you don’t usually see.

Because of Ivy’s neurological problems, she is doubly incontinent, so giving her the freedom to enjoy her life while keeping her clean, comfortable and healthy means rather a lot goes on behind the scenes every single day.

There are puppy pads, lots of them. Bedding and washable pads are constantly being changed and laundered. There are gloves, cotton wool, wet wipes, paper roll, disinfectant, antiseptic wash, hand sanitiser and bags for everything that needs disposing of.

There is her Metacam, filtered water and sunscreen for those little white ears. Her urine is regularly checked with dipsticks too, because recurrent urinary infections are an ongoing concern, and will remain so.

Then there’s Ivy’s environment itself. Her sleeping areas and walkways have been specially adapted and enclosed so she can move around and look out of her summer house window without the risk of jumping or falling from a height and further injuring her spine. She has ramps and steps, cosy beds, toys, and safe access to her enclosed garden.

None of these things is an emergency. There isn’t a dramatic vet photograph or an urgent appeal attached to them. They’re simply what caring for Ivy looks like every day, which is an important part of rescue that people don’t very often see.

Donations don’t only pay for emergencies and big veterinary bills. They also help to buy the puppy pads, cleaning supplies, medication, food and dozens of other very ordinary things that quietly keep cats like Ivy comfortable and enjoying a good quality of life.

And, behind all of this, is Ivy’s wonderful foster mum. She changes the pads, does the washing, cleans up the accidents, gives the medication, monitors Ivy’s health and makes sure she has everything she needs. Then she gets up the next day and does it all again. Several times a week Ivy’s foster “auntie” arrives to help to make sure Ivy’s back end is washed and kept clean. Due to Ivy being so wriggly, it’s definitely a two person job!

Because of that care, Ivy doesn’t have to spend her life being defined by incontinence or her wobbly back legs, she just gets to be Ivy. ❤️ That’s what all those very ordinary looking supplies, and your donations, help make possible.

Sound on 🔊

Her Ladyship would like everyone to know that she is quite content with the current standard of service.

That purr is clearly a five-star review. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Our beautiful Ivy has been enjoying herself in the sunshine! She’s living her best life and we are doing all we can to help her do that for as long as possible!

It’s so important she is kept as clean as possible and has her hygiene clips to make it easier for her foster mum to clean her back end. It’s especially important in this hot weather that she is clean and dry. Fly strike would be utterly devastating so we are doing everything humanly possible for this lovely girl!

A huge thanks to her forever foster mum who has dedicated so much of her time and upended her own life to give Ivy the particular care she needs over the past couple of years. ❤️🐾

Ivy’s care update❤️🐾
As you will know, our gorgeous Ivy has a number of health issues. She is in forever foster and will be our responsibility for the rest of her life. Her main issue has been the spinal nerve damage which has caused her to be doubly incontinent as well as being a bit wobbly on her back legs.

Her incontinence has led to numerous bladder infections, which is a common problem for her condition. Ivy’s bladder is damaged from the infections, with now thickened walls. She is becoming antibiotic resistant, which is a major concern. With all that in mind, it is absolutely imperative that we do all we can to keep her as clean as possible as well as frequently monitoring her urine for signs of change.

Ivy can release urine herself, but she also responds well to being ‘expressed’ to ensure as much urine is removed from her bladder as often as possible. We don’t want stagnant urine in her bladder, which increases her risk of infections.

Her lovely foster mum does her best (along with her sister helping to bathe Ivy) to keep her back end as clean as possible. That’s a bit of tricky job for a cat that wriggles like Ivy! 🙈😆

Caring for Ivy is a worry for her foster mum and getting her to a vet can also be problematic, and stressful for everyone, including Ivy.

We are absolutely delighted that a new local mobile veterinary service has recently launched called Heart at home vets. Often, Ivy and her foster mum need support, but Ivy isn’t always poorly enough to warrant seeing a vet, so a nurse visit every four or five weeks helps us to be more proactive with Ivy’s care. It also helps her foster mum learn how to spot any changes in Ivy’s urine and know when Ivy needs to see the vet.

These appointments are an unrushed half hour in Ivy’s own little house. There is time to check her and her urine, give her a bit of a hygiene clip around her back end (two person job) and there is time for the nurse to get to know Ivy and give her cuddles.

Do you have a pet that struggles with car journeys and vet waiting rooms? Do you work from home or don’t drive? Heart at Home Vets can come to see your pet. It saves on travel time and also massively reduces the length of time your pet is stressed.

As you can see from the photo, Ivy is very relaxed and enjoying the attention from her lovely Heart at Home Vets nurse and this is after having her ‘trousers’ clipped. We are so pleased to have this kind of support in caring for Ivy ❤️🐾

We do also like to support local small businesses where possible. Ivy is sponsored by Michelle's Mobile Cat Grooming Service Service. Please consider giving Michelle a call if your cat has a thick/long coat and struggles to keep it in top condition.
