Why sedation isn't a cure for being vet shy 😴

When a horse is terrified of needles, the default is often to use oral or injectable sedation to 'get the job done.' While sometimes necessary for safety, sedation does not teach the horse that the vet is safe. In fact, many horses remain mentally aware but physically restrained, which can sometimes increase their fear for next time. Cooperative Care training teaches the horse's brain to shift from 'fight-or-flight' to 'thinking' mode. It takes a little time, but it pays off for the rest of their life.

We’ve all seen a horse with ears flat back when the girth is tightened. But what about the horse that suddenly hates being groomed over their flank? Or the horse that has started refusing the right-rein canter transition? Before you call them naughty (or worse!) remember that horses are masters of hiding pain. Girthiness, flank sensitivity, and 'stubbornness' under saddle are some of the most common behavioral indicators of ulcers. A good rule to follow is: "rule out pain before you train."

As a vet, I see it often. It’s incredibly stressful for the horse, exhausting for you, and—let’s be honest—pretty dangerous for everyone involved.
Worse yet, as someone who sees a lot of ulcer cases, I know exactly how much that stress can damage a horse’s gut health.

That’s why I am incredibly excited to launch a new service: Equine Veterinary Cooperative Care & Desensitization.

I am combining my clinical veterinary background with evidence-based training methods (positive reinforcement with a force-free approach) to teach anxious horses to actively cooperate in their own medical care. No force, no twitches, no panic—just calm, clear communication.

What we can work on together:
Needle Phobias: Standing calmly for vaccines, sedation, and blood draws.
Medical Handling: Tolerating stethoscopes, thermometers, and trot-ups.
Grooming & Maintenance: Accepting clippers and farrier work.
De-worming: Learning to happily accept an oral syringe.
