Many websites are still stating that the French link is a kind bit when it is far from a kind but. Many people think the link sits flat on the tongue!
As you can see from these pictures I’ve taken of a French link in my own horse, the link sits upright. This causes compression of the tongue by the flat edge of the link. The top edge of the link digs into the top palate. Not a comfortable mouthpiece at all!
My horse wasn’t comfortable with this bit in her mouth even without rein pressure! Diddy Bits

“Fight or flight”
Ensuring your mouthpiece is comfortable for your horse or pony is very important. A horse that is comfortable is more accepting of the aids, relaxed and willing. If the bit you are using is painful or uncomfortable, their body goes into fight or flight mode! This is where you will find horses evading the contact either by running or other unwanted behaviour such as bucking, rearing, unwilling to go forward and general poor performance. Many traditional bits that are still widely used today due to the longevity of the material used are unsuitable and cause pain and discomfort, this in turn causes unwanted behaviour and affects performance!

Replenished stock alert! The following stock has been replenished. I know a lot were waiting for certain bits to come back into stock. We’ve had a delivery of eggbutt and full cheek comfort barrel bits. Full cheek and loose ring ported barrel bits and our new eggbutt tongue relief with larger cheeks!

Why thicker isn’t always better!
The tongue of the horse fills the entire oral cavity, some having larger tongues than others! The photo’s below show a 13h cob with a particularly large tongue with fleshy thick lip skin and a low palate. I find this in a lot of smaller cobs. Some having less room than smaller ponies!
You can’t even fit your finger in there let alone a bit.
This mare experiences too much tongue pressure with a thicker bit and linked bits dig into her palate and tongue.
She’s happiest in a comfort barrel with no links!

New product alert!
Due to the fact that horses not just ponies are responding well to our Diddy bits we are slowly going to be introducing larger sized bits. When I am out consulting I fit many horses with a Diddy bit. Often the horses have smaller mouths than many ponies I fit! Especially the high blood athletic horses!
We are expecting a delivery very soon of many out of stock bits and on this delivery we have a new larger eggbutt cheek version of our forward tilted tongue relief bit!
The cheek is 65mm by 45mm so bigger than our original bit but still quite petite. The smaller cheek reduces the amount of metal and therefore reduces the weight in the mouth.
One of our fabulous fitters Julia Lyon from Ikkos Equestrian has asked for us to produce this bit due to her having great success with it.
At the moment this is available on preorder in the most popular sizes we fit to horses 4.75”, 5” and 5.25”
