Here are my top tips to make your house move calm for your dog so that they can be happy in their new home.

And if you were wondering - Islay and Bella are extremely happy with their new home and space to run around!

You can’t expect your dog to be able to focus on you, walk without pulling and recall when you ask, if you aren’t meeting their natural, breed-specific needs.

Training is a two way street and you need to be a team to be successful.

A huge congratulations to our class members who passed their Bronze, Silver and Gold Good Citizen Awards this week!

These awards are not easy to pass and are the result of effort, consistency, and a great relationship with their dogs.

Sean and Conwy, who passed their Silver Award this week, said:

“As soon as my golden retriever puppy had had his jabs and was able to attend, we went to puppy class and attended class almost every week until he passed his silver good citizen test “with flying colours” at 19 months old.

Kaye is a brilliant teacher. She is incredibly knowledgeable, patient and has cultivated a really supportive and welcoming atmosphere in her classes. Having a young, excitable and large dog can be daunting at times but every week Kaye taught me new techniques to train him, to have fun, provide him with exciting stimulation, check his health and even teach him how to stretch his muscles.

My dog, Conwy, has grown into a really good boy and I credit Kaye and the rest of the team at Forests & Fetch for giving him and me the tools to get there!”

A huge well done to our class trainers and for their amazing teaching, thanks to for assessing, and congratulations to all the dogs and their owners for your amazing hard work!

Every year I guest lecture a module on the Canine Behaviour, Training and Performance degree with Wrexham University for aspiring trainers and behaviourists.

I focus on helping them understand WHY training techniques work - because with greater understanding they can support each individual dog better.

I adore the “aha” moments when they suddenly realise what has been causing their dogs to act certain ways and how they can communicate with them more effectively.

I’m very lucky to get to work with such knowledgeable and motivated people, who always have an animal’s best interests at heart.

A huge thank you to Kaye and Jacqui and their dogs who helped the students put what they’d learnt into practise.

The future is looking very bright for dog training!

Why did putting a lead on a dog trigger them to react?

When a dog is nervous of another dog, they will release adrenaline.

This triggers a flight or fight (or freeze or fiddle) response.

The dog we met this morning was coping well with a dog-dog interaction, despite being a little nervous, as they felt able to move away (show a flight response) at any moment.

However, when that lead went on and the owner held it tight, the option to run away had been removed and the dog felt trapped.

That triggered a fight response, where they barked and lunged, to try and get themselves out of that situation that they no longer felt safe in. This is often called lead reactivity.

Was the owner wrong to put their dog on a lead? No, it was an important safety measure.

How could they have done so without triggering a reaction? By putting the lead on, stepping slightly away, and keeping the lead loose so the dog still felt it had freedom to move and act naturally.

Why is that story so important? Whenever you are working with your reactive dog, try to make them feel like they are free to move as they wish by keeping the lead loose.

We’re discussing this in more detail in my 90 day Barky to Brilliant challenge now (link in bio).

If I could tell every new puppy owner just one thing?

Sure, teach your puppy a sit, down and stay if you’d like to, but that is not the most important thing for the first month with your puppy.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to do with your puppy before they are 12 weeks old is to build confidence. New items, new noises, new people, new places, new smells, new textures. Make sure you’re providing them with loads of new and good experiences during that time.

95% of the behavioural problems that I see every day in dogs are due to fear. Trust me when I say you want a confident puppy in order to have a happy adult dog.

Training can wait, behaviour cannot.
