Covering new areas this year!

I get a lot of requests from around the Ards Penninsula which I normally don't have time to do because of traffic etc, and cannot find anyone to cover the area

I will be using the Motorbike a lot more this year, so I can skip the queues

So, this year I will be giving one day per week to cover the following areas.....

Comber, Hollywood, Newtownards, Donaghadee,Portaferry, Strangford

I will cover these areas on Fridays to try to batch ppl in 🙂🏍✂️🐎

Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to bites from mosquitos, flies (e.g. Simulium, black fly) and midges (e.g. Culicoides) which can affect almost any horse or pony – regardless of type, breed and age – but research does show it is particularly prevalent in some native breeds. Sweet itch is the most common allergic skin disease in the UK and affects around 5% of our horse population.

The term ‘sweet itch’ literally describes the sensation experienced by the horse in reaction to the bites, it can also be referred to as ‘pruritis’. The condition varies in severity from the horse occasionally scratching their tail on a tree to the very worst cases who will scratch and scratch, causing self-trauma, which in turn can lead to secondary infections.

How to spot sweet itch in horses
Early diagnosis and treatment of sweet itch will give you a much better chance of being able to manage it effectively. If notice your horse or pony scratching, the first thing is to ascertain whether they are actually suffering from sweet itch. There are many other allergens with the same or very similar clinical signs as sweet itch but may not be caused by midges

Keeping the horse as happy as possible should be the owners main Priority

It is amazing the results that can be achieved through dedication, commitment and love!!

Emma keeps April clipped and has spent years finding the best combination of products etc that work brilliantly for April's Sweet Itch (which is a topic i'll cover in my next post. What works for one horse won't necessarily be as affective for another, so there's a bit of homework involved

There are many excellent products available to help such as Stop That Itch protective barrier cream, Botanica wash and Anti Itch cream, as well as numerous types of fly repellent.........however, keeping the horse fully fly sheeted is massively helpful, as well as chosing to turn the horse out at night when the midge is less active

Emma uses the fly sheet 24/7 and thoroughly baths April any time she appears to be getting itchy

I didn't want to post up photos of a horses condition when badly affected by sweet itch, instead, I felt it far better to show the results that can be acheived thanks to the love and care of the owner 🥰

I genuinely am in denial that Sept clipping season is just a few weeks away 😮

While I do loooove clipping all the beautiful fluffers, we have def been blessed with a pretty damn good Summer so far, and I don't want it to end!

Luckily for me, I no longer have to do the drudgery of freezing winter mud, rain, hail and wind 😆

So.......anyway.......back to clipping. This year, my prices are staying the same. However I have dropped some clients over the last year or so, and have taken on a good few new clients. I lost my tolerance for bu****it from some self entitled folk 🤷‍♂️

Is what it is 😆

I will need a bit of pre booking for this September, as there are more ppl to get around.........there's no need to pre book now, mid August is grand

I am absolutely delighted with the improvement in this little cobs legs after just starting working with them around mid June

To the untrained eye, it might be hard to notice, but the CPPD (Chronic Proliferative Pastern Dermatitis) swelling and infection have came down massively. There is no longer any smell. The swelling before had little nodule swellings on top of them, which have mostly gone down, leaving us with the bigger swelling to work on easier

They are no longer raw, and red......now they are taking on a paler pink colour, and in some places no colour, just a bit of calloused looking tissue from where they have shrunk, and hardened

This horse has CPPD aswell as CPL, so the CPPD could have easily been mistaken for just CPL

Thanks to Jillian Scott The Clipper Queen for some great advice, and for anyone that needs information regarding these conditions, there are groups such as the CPL Awareness Group CIC that have a wealth of excellent advice from very knowledgeable folk

This is a functional clip to help the horse.......I don't clip between the skin folds as this can potentially cause a lot of irritation when the hair is growing back, especially with pink skin

Much respect to Sue Christie for religiously putting in the time and effort to get this sweetheart feeling more comfortable 🙌

What we have been using is Botanica International Ltd Wash, a strong dilution allowed to dry in without washing off for its natural antibacterial, anti fungal and anti septic properties, paired with Anusol and Sudocrem, the latter 2 both containing zinc-oxide to help shrink the swellings.....

Apologies for the social media absence

I'm still very much clipping away lol, but have been focusing on real life, rather than staring at a phone every day posting stuff 😅

I think the amount of time spent looking at a phone, writing posts, aswell as having to use the phone for practically everything, should it be paying for stuff, shopping, banking, social interaction, information, entertainment, aswell as responding to work related stuff via WhatsApp, Messenger, Text, phone calls..............I think at a point it starts to consume some people. For me it does anyway, hence enjoying the quiet time 🙂

This post has taken almost half an hour to write and edit, just a tiny post!

Joey is loving his new life with his new family........and even has a new bestie with Roxy the Rottweiler 🙂
