Donaldson's Vets In 2005 we opened our Mirfield branch surgery. After an extensive re-fit it was converted from an office building into the newest Donaldson’s surgery.

The three storey building houses a large waiting room, 2 consulting rooms, dispensary, large kennels, lab, 2 operating theatres and a radiography suite. The surgery is located in the centre of Mirfield and has ample parking making it ideal for those in Dewsbury, Batley and the surrounding areas.

Prepare before the fireworks 🎆

🎆 Fireworks expected? A little preparation can make a big difference.

Think about your dog's routine before the first bang — from walking earlier and closing the curtains to preparing enrichment and making sure their microchip details are up to date.

And if you already know your dog finds fireworks difficult, please don’t wait until fireworks night to contact us.

Speak to us in advance so there’s time to discuss your dog and make an appropriate plan. 💜

Save this checklist so you have it ready for fireworks season. 📌

FIREWORKS 🎇LOUD NOISES 🔊THUNDERSTORMS ⚡

👀 What does anxiety look like in your dog?

It isn’t always hiding or visibly shaking.

Panting when they’re not hot, repeatedly checking windows, struggling to settle or suddenly wanting to stay very close to you can all be clues that something is making them uncomfortable.

Every dog is different, which is why noticing changes in their normal behaviour can be so important.

What’s the first thing you notice when your dog hears fireworks or thunder?

FIREWORKS 🎇LOUD NOISES 🔊THUNDERSTORMS ⚡

Myth v's Facts

❌ “My dog will grow out of it.”

It’s an easy assumption to make — particularly if your dog seems completely back to normal once the noise has stopped.

But anxiety can become worse if it’s left unmanaged.

So if fireworks, thunderstorms or other noises leave your dog frightened, don’t assume you simply have to wait for them to grow out of it.

🧠💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY | 10 OCTOBER

Looking after yourself matters. 💚

Life can be busy, and it's easy to put your own wellbeing at the bottom of the list. But self-care doesn't have to mean big changes. Sometimes it's the small things we do each day that help us feel better.

🌿 Step outside and get some fresh air
🚶‍♀️ Take a walk and give your mind a break
🐶 Spend time with your pet
☕ Take a proper break during a busy day
📱 Switch off from screens for a little while
💬 Talk to someone if things are feeling difficult
😴 Make time for rest and sleep
❤️ Be kind to yourself and recognise that you don't have to do everything at once

FIREWORKS 🎇LOUD NOISES 🔊THUNDERSTORMS ⚡

🐶 Would you recognise if your dog was struggling with noise anxiety?

Some signs are obvious, such as trembling or trying to hide.

Others can be easier to dismiss — like panting, pacing, refusing food or becoming destructive.

The important thing is to notice what’s different for your dog.

If you recognise these behaviours around fireworks, thunder or other loud noises, talk to us about what you’ve noticed.

Recognising that they’re struggling is the first step from coping to calm. 💜

🐾🩸 A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING PET BLOOD DONORS! 🩸🐾

We want to say a huge thank you to all the incredible pets who gave blood. ❤️

Your generosity truly makes a life-saving difference. Every unit donated can help save up to 4 lives, giving poorly and critically ill pets a precious second chance. 🐶🐱🐾

❤️🥰🌟You really are true lifesavers. 🌟🥰❤️

To every brave donor, and every owner who makes these donations possible, thank you for giving the gift of life. Your kindness, courage and generosity mean more than you know. 💙

Keep being amazing, keep saving lives! 🩸🐾💙

❤️Our next donation day is Sunday 11th October❤️

If you would like to get involved with Pet Blood Bank Donations, check out the link below for your nearest donation session and how to register your dog as a donor❤️

https://www.petbloodbankuk.org/pet-owners/dog-blood-donation/find-your-nearest-donation-session/?s=hd5+8hn&r=10

For your dog to be a blood donor, they must meet certain criteria. 🥰🐾
Your dog’s welfare is always our priority, and so for them to become a lifesaver, they must be:

Fit and healthy
Between one and eight years old
Weigh more than 25kg (55 pounds / 3 stone 13 pounds)
Have a good temperament
Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
Not on any medication

What type of dog makes a good donor?🐶🐾🐕🐩

In addition to meeting our donor criteria, we are looking for dogs who are confident and happy being handled. They should enjoy meeting new people and be comfortable going to the vets. Your dog needs to be willing and happy to take part in the donation process and show us this through their behaviour. We want your dog to love coming to see us, to enjoy being a donor, and be enthusiastic about the process. This is why confident dogs who like meeting new people and getting attention make excellent donors.

FIREWORKS 🎇 LOUD NOISES 🔊 THUNDERSTORMS ⚡

🎆⛈️ Does your dog struggle with fireworks, thunderstorms or other loud noises?

Fear doesn’t have to be something they simply learn to live with.

There are lots of ways we can support dogs who find noisy events difficult — and the best time to start thinking about that support is before the next noisy night.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing advice to help you recognise the signs of noise anxiety, prepare your dog and know when to ask for help.

Because fear doesn’t have to be part of the forecast. 💜

Last week playful Labrador Chester needed emergency treatment after biting off more than he could chew! He was rushed to the surgery after being injured by a stick, some of which was still lodged at the back of his mouth causing bleeding and pain. After initial examination and pain relief, Chester was promptly given a general anaesthetic where the remaining pieces of stick were safely removed. As pictured, the stick had caused considerable damage to his mouth leaving a large puncture wound. This area was explored and flushed with sterile saline to ensure any smaller shards of wood were not left behind. Chester was discharged the very same night and he is expected to make a full recovery!

In this case, Chester was lucky and his story highlights the real danger that sticks pose to our beloved canine companions. Sticks can easily become lodged in the throat and mouth. Whilst this may cause minor wounds, not forgetting the risk of infection, sadly some dogs will suffer life threatening or fatal injuries caused by impaling the vital structures within the head, neck and chest.

So whilst throwing sticks for your dog can appear like fun, we would advise owners to opt for dog-friendly alternatives such as ‘Kong Safestix’ or a good old fashioned Frisbee!

If your pet has been injured - you should seek immediate veterinary advice. Here at Donaldsons Vets, our Maple Street surgery is the site of our 24 hour hospital facilities. For out of hours emergencies, call 01484 421512.
