A little honesty about who you're actually buying from.

Home & Roost is our family: Mum, Dad, my brother and me. Dad (Richard) started building wooden hutches in Kent back in 1982, and the workshop has never really stopped since. Tongue and groove, proper timber, the way he taught us.

And yes, we're the ones who hide a sweet in the box with your instructions. People sometimes email us more excited about the Freddo than the hutch. We understand completely. 🍫

We are bringing a catio to the NEC.

On 12 September we will be at The Cat Show Live in Birmingham with a Wingham set up on the stand, and you are very welcome to climb inside it. That is genuinely the best way to understand one. Photos flatten them. Standing in one, with the mesh overhead and room to put a chair in, tends to answer the question people have been turning over for months.

Bring your questions about size, your garden's awkward corner, and whether your particular cat would actually use it. We would rather talk you out of the wrong one than sell you it.

There's a week or two of the school holidays left, and someone else might be looking after your rabbits or guinea pigs for a week. Most sitter mishaps come down to one thing: what's obvious to you isn't obvious to them.

Leave this taped to the hutch:
📋 Feed amounts, written down (not "a handful")
💧 Water check morning AND evening in warm weather
👀 The daily flystrike check, and what to look for
🌳 Where the shade is at 3pm, not 9am
📞 Your vet's number and your pet's quirks ("she hides, that's normal")

Dry late-summer nights are hard on hedgehogs. The worms and beetles they eat burrow deeper when the ground bakes, so hogs walk further for less food, with fewer puddles to drink from.

If you'd like to help the ones on your patch tonight:
💧 A shallow dish of water at ground level (a plant saucer is perfect)
🥣 Meaty cat or dog food if you want to feed. Never bread and milk, hedgehogs can't digest either
🍂 Leave one corner of the garden a bit wild
✂️ Check long grass before strimming. Always.

There's a middle path between "indoor cat" and "out roaming who knows where."

Rabbits cope far better with cold than heat. Once the thermometer passes about 25C, a hutch in full sun can become dangerous within hours.

Three things you can do today:
🌳 Move the hutch or run into shade before midday, not after
🧊 Freeze a water bottle, wrap it in a towel, and let them lie against it
💧 Check water twice a day. Bottles empty faster and algae grows quicker in warm weather

And a plea from us: check your rabbit's rear end every day in warm months. Flystrike moves fast, and catching it early is everything.
