We have recently seen an increase in the number of colic cases. We suspect the main culprit may be the change in weather. Colic is the one word that every horse owner dreads, and is one of the most common emergencies that we see. It is what we would class as a โ€™true emergencyโ€™ and can mean that big decisions need to be made quickly, so recognising the signs and acting promptly is incredibly important.

Colic simply means โ€˜abdominal discomfort or painโ€™ which can be due to a wide range of conditions, that sometimes do not relate only to the digestive tract. Due to the many causes, treatment plans will vary. Your horseโ€™s condition can also change or deteriorate very quickly, and may require re-assessment for further investigation and changes in treatment plan.

Rolling
๐ŸดLoss of appetite
๐ŸดRestlessness
๐ŸดFlank Watching
๐ŸดSweating
๐ŸดReduced number of droppings

Early identification and prompt veterinary attention can make a huge difference in the outcome.

If you think your horse is showing signs of colic, it is important to stay calm and call the vet straight away. They will likely advise you to remove all feed, take off any rugs, and ensure that the horse is in a safe place. It is also not always advisable to walk a colicing horse, so please speak to your vet before doing so. Please ๐——๐—ข ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง give them any medication until the vet has been to examine the horse, as that can limit what medication they are able to prescribe.
