In honour of Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month this May, I wanted to reflect on my journey so far. I may be very new to my SVN journey, and very tired from late nights of studying while balancing life, but I have never felt as fulfilled as I have since starting this path. I have had my fair share of careers from reality tv star, Army dog handler/ trainer and Armed Police officer, but I think this one feels the best fit.

The universe works in mysterious ways, and I have found myself in an amazing practice. I’m incredibly grateful for how friendly, supportive, and patient the whole team I work with are. They always answer my questions with a smile, even if they’ve been on call all night and are already 10 hours into another shift — and likely thinking, “you should know the answer to that by now.”
I may have spent my whole life working with animals, but in very different roles, and I only first stepped behind the scenes of a veterinary practice last October. So, while it all still feels very new, I am absolutely loving the new challenges it brings into my life.

Even in sad times, good things can bloom. If it wasn’t for that frightful night my dogs had to endure, and the months I spent during covid helping to nurse and rehabilitate them back to having some quality of life again, I would never have realised this career path was meant for me.

Distance queen Vibe. Slight issue when I join her in agility, she triples her speed 🤣 and she doesn't have full control of her legs yet at 16 months.

Happy 1st official Birthday, Vibe 🎂✨

This year you’ve shown me that you can’t put a limit on a dog when you lead with love, patience, and trust. You came into this world a little unsure, a little worried, and very sensitive, but look at you now.

You’ve blossomed in ways I couldn’t have imagined. You’re braver, happier, more confident, and you’ve proven that fear doesn’t define potential. Watching you learn that the world isn’t as scary as it once felt has been one of the most rewarding journeys I’ve ever been on.

You may have a few annoying little quirks like needing to permanently be touching me, and insisting not only on your own collar and coat… but apparently everyone else’s too, all at the same time. But those quirks are just part of what makes you you, and I wouldn’t change a single one.

From everyday wins to big steps forward, you remind me daily why I do what I do. You are proof that relationships, consistency, and kindness build strong dogs, not pressure or limits.

Here’s to your first year of growth, courage, and becoming you. I can’t wait to see where the next year takes us 💫🐕

Last minute decision to take Zen to a local nursery sheepdog trial today. The girl did good on very tricky sheep, she put herself where she needed to be and I gave her a helping hand to navigate. She's not seen a sheep for 2.5 months apart from a quick training session on Friday, but she came home with a 6th place. Amongst some very experienced handlers. I'm proud of my first sheepdog that I've trained and being a newcomer to the game. Thanks to Just for friends for keeping her fueled.
