Today was our summer show and this year we were really lucky with the weather and there was a lovely atmosphere on the field with handlers and dogs enjoying the camaraderie. There were two courses an agility round followed by a steeplechase round with our traditional buffet lunch between the two. While for some of our handlers it was their first time competing many of our more experienced dogs and handlers joined us for the day and everyone gave a good account of themselves

Congratulations to all, well done to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated, supported and helped during the day........
It wouldn't happen without you.

Pictured below are some of the 26 handlers and 39 dogs who do all or some of their agility training with us at Barnlake DTC.
Over the last two days they have been competing at the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society Agility Show and we are extremely proud of how well everyone has done; there were lots of clear rounds, many who were first or second in their respective classes and some who gained the ultimate by moving up a grade. For fear of missing anyone out we are not going to try and name all the winners but special mention must go to Amy with Darcy and Emma with Haggis who only started training their dogs with us in October and felt confident enough to enter their first open agility show and then doing amazingly well by winning an agility class each. Well done to everyone

Alan first met Merril in 1980 when training took place at the Withybush hanger and when that finished he started training his GSD's with Merril and Paddy at Barnlake. What started as a desire to have a well trained dog has developed over the years into a lifelong hobby of his.
Other than a break due to work and family commitments Alan continues to train his dogs regularly attending classes two or three times a week doing a mixture of agility and obedience work.
Here he is pictured with his latest dog Major who has just passed his Intermediate Certificate; when asked why he keeps coming to Barnlake he said "It's a big part of my life it's more than just dog training it's meeting like minded people and spending quality time with your dog"

It's more than just training it becomes a hobby

Congratulations to Sally with Poppy and Lynn with Lucy who have both passed their advanced level certificates. Both these handlers have been coming to Barnlake for sometime taking their training beyond the basics and further developing their dog's skills as well as enjoying sharing their skills and experiences with like minded people during the lessons.
In the advanced certificate we look at a variety of different things including scent and directional work; we combine skills such as retrieving a toy over a jump and challenging the dogs to work things out for themselves with activities such as mazes as well as consolidating the skills covered in the earlier certificates.

Congratulations to Steph with Barney and Anne with Luka who have both passed their intermediate certificates ....... both are now working in their advanced certificates and in addition have joined Barnlake Agility club this year.

Some of our handlers choose to stay on for a second, third or even fourth course after the initial eight weeks training..... for some it becomes a way of life !!
As they continue with their training we build on the skills taught in beginners and puppy classes and start to develop them so the dogs are confident doing these skills in a variety of situations. Playing 'find it' is a great way of developing the relationship between handler and dog and when starting out this is made easy by the handler sitting in the floor and hiding the toy behind them...... by the time we get to novice level we are challenging the dog to play 'find it' outside and in the long grass
