Know the signs, start cooling, call a vet.

Signs of heatstroke can progress very quickly. It only takes a 2°C rise in body temperature for heatstroke to kick in. Once in heatstroke, your dog can suffer from brain damage or even death in 15 minutes!

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately start cooling them down and call a vet for further advice. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life.

Research has found that in the UK, 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke don’t survive, although 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to recover.

Keep your dogs safe in hot weather!

Not an obese dog but really piled on the weight in the last couple of months
Blamed on not walking in the heat which of course is correct but apart from maybe tomorrow morning it is under 16 at 7 am so a walk can be safely done at this time
Why not cut the food down?
Fat dogs feel hotter
The coat grows thicker
The coat doesn’t moult ( in moulting breeds obviously )
They are so much harder to groom as
they can’t stand as well
They can’t stand on 3 legs when you raise one to trim
I am adding a £5.00 increase anyway but may add a further to all fat dogs for this reason
If people can afford to over feed then they can afford to pay
The risk of an old and fat dog getting heat stroke is increased so I am refusing to groom a few. I don’t have an air conditioned unit. I do have fans and covers on the windows
It is not bad here but just bringing the dog is stressful in the heat.
Plus because they aren’t being walked prior to grooming they are more inclined to poo in the bath or on the table
I am only in the future grooming dogs under 20 kg and have begun to refuse a few sadly but I really can’t hold them up or catch them if they try and jump off the table

He is neutered and carrying a bit of weight which alters the coat making it soft and not able to strip so well
