It’s Volunteers’ Week, and we wanted to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU to every volunteer who has supported us over the years.

Whether you’ve helped walk dogs, cuddled puppies, prepared enrichment activities, cleaned up endless muddy paw prints, helped with training sessions, assisted with arts and crafts, supported events, completed work experience placements, or simply offered an extra pair of hands when we needed it most, you have made a real difference.

Running a pet care business is very much a team effort, and volunteers play a valuable role in helping us provide the highest standard of care for the animals entrusted to us. Your enthusiasm, kindness, patience, and willingness to learn never go unnoticed.

Many of our volunteers have gone on to gain qualifications, secure employment within the animal industry, or discover a passion they never knew they had. Watching that journey unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Most importantly, our dogs benefit enormously from the extra attention, enrichment, training, cuddles, and companionship that you provide.

From all of us at Doggy Day Academy and Paws 4 A Break, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and support. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

Please join us in celebrating all of our amazing volunteers this Volunteers’ Week. 🐾❤️

YOUR DOG DESERVES MORE THAN DAYCARE.

Many dogs don't need more exercise.

They need training. They need life skills. They need enrichment. They need social skills. They need rest.

At Doggy Day Academy, we do things differently.

We are a doggy daycare school where dogs enjoy structured days designed to help them learn, develop confidence and thrive.

Whether you have a puppy learning about the world, an adolescent who seems to have forgotten everything you've taught them, an adult dog who needs more stimulation while you're at work, or an older dog who still enjoys companionship and enrichment, we're here to help.

Every dog starts with an assessment to ensure the environment is right for them and that they will be happy and successful as part of our academy.

If you're looking for more than just somewhere to leave your dog for the day, we'd love to hear from you.

☀️ BBQ Dangers Most Dog Owners Don’t Think About ☀️

When the sun comes out, many of us head straight for the garden, fire up the BBQ and invite family and friends around.

For us, it’s a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon.

For some dogs, however, it can be a very different experience.

While many dogs enjoy being part of the fun, BBQs can present a number of hidden dangers. Hot grills, food scraps, dropped skewers, open gates and well meaning guests offering treats can all cause problems.

But it’s not just the physical risks we need to think about.

Imagine being surrounded by noisy conversations, children running around, unfamiliar visitors and tempting smells everywhere. For some dogs, that can be overwhelming.

As dog owners, it’s important that we look beyond whether our dogs are simply coping and ask whether they are actually comfortable and enjoying themselves.

A few simple measures can make all the difference:

🐾 Keep food, bones and skewers out of reach

🐾 Ensure gates are secure when guests arrive and leave

🐾 Provide plenty of fresh water and shade

🐾 Allow your dog access to a quiet place to rest if they choose

🐾 Supervise interactions with children and visitors

🐾 Watch for signs that your dog may need a break from the excitement

Remember, not every dog wants to be the centre of attention. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is give them a calm, comfortable place to relax while the humans enjoy the party.

A safe dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog helps everyone enjoy the day. ❤️🐶☀️

☀️ What a week it's been at Paws 4 a Break! ☀️

While many of you have been enjoying the glorious sunshine, we've been busy making sure your four-legged family members stay happy, safe and entertained.

With the temperatures rising, we've had to make a few changes to our usual routines. Some walks were shorter, others were moved around, but one thing never changes – your fur babies always come first. We still made sure everyone got their all-important social time, because we all know that's often the highlight of their day... although judging by some of their faces, I do sometimes wonder what they're actually thinking! 🤷‍♀️🐾

This week we said goodbye to Thorn, who headed home after enjoying his own little holiday with us while his humans were away. Charlie has moved from Tasha's over to Martyn's house for his final week before his mum returns home.

Meanwhile, Bella continues her mission to convince everyone she's actually a lap dog and, judging by the amount of sofa she's claimed, she's doing a pretty good job! 😂🛋️

We also welcomed lovely Lily and Lilly to the Paws family. Despite having sight issues and diabetes, she hasn't let that stop her one bit and has settled in brilliantly with all her new friends. ❤️

🌳 Tuesday Adventures 🌳

With the heat in mind, we kept things sensible and split into two walks.

🐕 Sully, Willow and Bella enjoyed exploring High Melton Woods.

🐕 Ziggy, Onyx, Scout and Flo had a fantastic time on the field.

🐕 Biggles, Winnie Mae, Bingo, Lilly, Sam and Betty headed to Rawmarsh Woods for their adventure.

🏃 Wednesday Fun 🏃

Pippy and Thorn treated Racecourse Field like their own personal racetrack, playing chase non-stop.

Meanwhile Bella, Lilly, Charlie, Teddy and Moose were much more interested in conducting important sniff inspections and catching up on all the local gossip. 🐶📰

Delilah and Murphy provided us with some brilliant action shots while having fun together. It's always amazing watching friendships grow and seeing dogs build confidence through play.

💨 Thursday Zoomies 💨

Betty and Poppy were in full zoomie mode until Poppy decided enough was enough and took the plunge into a puddle to cool off! 🤦‍♀️💦

Poppy then spent the rest of her walk trying every trick possible to avoid going home.

Bingo, on the other hand, had completely different ideas. After deciding it was simply too warm for all that running around, he made a direct trip back to the van for a well-earned drink. Smart boy! 😎

My daughter also joined us this week and thoroughly enjoyed helping out. Her main role? Professional dog cuddler. Judging by the wagging tails, she was a huge success. ❤️🐾

🌲 Friday Explorers 🌲

Friday saw Kay enjoying her very first walk in St John's Wood alongside William, Charlie, Bella, Buddy, Meg and Molly. New sights, new smells and plenty of happy tails!

As always, while you're busy working hard, we're making sure your dogs are having the best time possible, making friends, exploring new places and creating lots of happy memories.

🐾 We currently have spaces available for new dogs and have expanded the areas we cover, so if you know someone looking for a reliable, caring dog walker or home boarder, we'd be incredibly grateful if you shared our details.

That's all for this week's adventures!

☀️ KEEPING OUR FUR BABIES SAFE IN THE HEAT 🐾

Not our usual weekly rundown today…

With temperatures soaring, our number one priority has simply been making sure your lovely fur babies stay safe, cool and happy ❤️

Hot weather can mean changes to routines, locations and timings, but every decision we make is with your dogs’ wellbeing at the centre of it all. No walk, adventure or schedule is ever more important than keeping every dog safe.

Today was no exception.

It meant an earlier start for staff, making sure cold water was constantly available, ice packs were ready, wet covers were prepared and fans were running in every crate to help keep everyone cool 🧊💨

A huge mention also has to go to Martyn for the behind-the-scenes organisation, making sure every dog still got their walks while carefully managing the heat and safety throughout the day 👏

We know routine changes can sometimes be inconvenient, so we genuinely appreciate all of your understanding, patience and continued support during the hotter weather.

Please know this — your fur babies mean just as much to us as they do to you 🐶🐾

Thank you for trusting us to care for them every single day

With temperatures expected to reach around 30 degrees tomorrow, our Extreme Heat Weather Protocol will be in place at Paws 4 A Break.

The welfare of the dogs will always come first and we will be monitoring temperatures closely throughout the day, alongside considering each individual dog’s:
• age
• breed
• coat type
• health needs
• ability to cope in warmer weather

To help keep everyone as safe and comfortable as possible:
• Cooling jackets are available
• Extra fans have been added to the vans
• Walks will be carried out earlier where possible
• Pop in visits may be offered instead of longer walks where appropriate
• Dogs will be walked in shaded areas
• Walks may be shortened if needed based on conditions and the individual dog

As always, if we feel conditions become unsafe at any point, we will adjust plans accordingly and may have to cancel.

Thank you for trusting us to care for your dogs during the warmer weather. Please also ensure your dogs have access to plenty of fresh water at home this evening and tomorrow morning before collection.
