⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A lovely review from Kyle following our home session with Ralph and Cooper!

Helping owners feel confident carrying on the training themselves is a big part of what I do at K9 Solutions.

We worked through practical exercises, including name recognition, redirecting attention and the bed command, with clear guidance and a homework sheet to support continued practice.

Thank you, Kyle, for your thoughtful review and for the effort you both put into the session. Lovely to hear you’ve already been practising! 🐾

🐾 Kyle, Ralph & Cooper — building calmer habits at home

Today we worked on giving both dogs clear guidance around each other, using a secure gate, controlled distance and rewards.

In this video, Kyle is working Ralph through turning away from Cooper and following the “bed” command, using leash pressure to guide the redirection and rewarding him for following through.

Meanwhile, Cooper is behind the gate, being rewarded for calmly disengaging. We then alternate the dogs so both get to practise both sides of the exercise.

With tension previously developing around toys, attention and simply passing each other, we’re working towards:

✅ Breaking the habit of staring and fixating before it escalates.
✅ Teaching each dog to turn away and reconnect with their handler.
✅ Making “bed” a familiar place to settle.
✅ Helping both dogs feel more comfortable when the other receives attention or moves around.
✅ Giving Kyle a clear routine he can practise consistently.

The dog behind the gate is learning too — choosing to look away and relax deserves rewarding just as much as following a command.

We keep the work manageable, respond early to tension and build gradually. Alongside safe management at home and attention to any discomfort, the aim is calmer responses, fewer opportunities for conflict and a safer household for everyone.

Short sessions, clear guidance and rewarding the choices we want to see. 🐶🐶

🐾 Another great one-to-one with Stella and Willow—their third session together!

We started at the “door to Narnia”… otherwise known as the front door! 😂 For Willow, there’s plenty of excitement waiting on the other side, so we worked on waiting before being invited out with “let’s go”.

We repeated this at the garden gate, introducing a clear “no” marker when Willow tried to push through. The gate gently closed to pause access, then we reset and rewarded her for waiting for the invitation. Clear communication and good timing throughout. 👏

Then we moved on to:

✅ Direction changes to encourage Willow to stay connected with Stella.
✅ Positive markers and rewards to highlight the choices we wanted.
✅ Small distractions to practise keeping that connection.
✅ “The brake”—stopping when Willow pulled ahead, then continuing once the lead relaxed.

Stella is doing a brilliant job putting the work in. Everyday moments at doors, gates and on walks give us plenty of opportunities to build better habits. Well done both! 🐕💚

Great first session today with Natalie, Lyra and Ragley.

Lyra is a newly adopted 4.5 year old German Shepherd. In the house and garden she is lovely, but once she gets outside she becomes very alert, strong on the lead and difficult to keep connected with her handler. Ragley, her younger housemate, is generally well behaved, but walking both dogs together is not possible yet because Lyra’s excitement and pulling takes over.

Today we started where the problem begins: at home, at the doorway, in the garden and around the front of the house.

A big part of the session was showing that training is not just about the dog. Very often, the first job is training the owner to understand what expectations need to be created, how to communicate those expectations clearly, and how to use lead pressure correctly so the dog understands what is being asked.

We worked on:

- engagement with the handler
- controlled movement before leaving the house
- lead pressure and release
- direction changes using “let’s go”
- stopping Lyra from dragging Natalie out of the training picture
- rewarding the right choices
- keeping Ragley managed separately while Lyra learns the foundations

The aim was not to march off on a long walk. The aim was to show Lyra that pulling forward, scanning and taking control does not move the walk on. Calmness, connection and following the handler does.

Within the session Natalie could see what was possible. Lyra started to understand the pressure, respond to the change of direction, and pay more attention to the person on the end of the lead.

Natalie sent a lovely message afterwards saying she valued the session, could now “see the light through the tunnel,” and wanted to book another session later this month.

That is exactly what good training should do: give the owner confidence, give the dog clarity, and create a practical plan both can build on.

Well done Natalie, Lyra and Ragley. A really positive start.

Great session today with Jordan and Smudge at Cyfarthfa Park, working on thresholds, focus and handler engagement around distractions.
We used a 3 metre long line to give Smudge a little freedom, but still keep structure in the walk. As Smudge began to wander or engage with distractions, Jordan calmly changed direction and used the “let’s go” cue, bringing Smudge back into the training picture.
This is why I like using a long line in this type of work. It helps the dog become more aware of the distance between themselves and the handler. Instead of the handler constantly chasing the dog’s attention, the dog starts learning to check in, follow direction and stay mentally connected.
Smudge worked really well, and Jordan handled the session brilliantly. Small, calm, consistent changes like this are what build better behaviour in real-life environment

Great update from Annabelle and Copper.
Copper originally needed help with his reactivity, especially around other dogs on lead. In our sessions we worked on building clearer communication between handler and dog, using leash pressure, redirection, leadership and well-timed markers to help Copper understand what was expected from him.
A big part of the work was teaching Copper that reacting does not move him forward or get him access to what he wants. When needed, we used calm negative markers, removal from the situation, tethering and ignoring unwanted behaviour, then rewarded the better choices when he settled, checked in and redirected back to Annabelle.
The results speak for themselves. Copper is now doing brilliantly off lead, listening well, and has improved massively on lead too with no more barking at dogs. He still has a little excitement at the start of walks, but the progress is fantastic.
Well done Annabelle and Copper. Proper teamwork and consistency paying off. 👏

Great second session today with Stella and her German Shepherd, Willow.
We worked in the front garden on the “let’s go” exercise, using gentle leash pressure and rewards to help redirect Willow and bring her focus back to Stella.
A big part of the session was getting the handler back into the training picture. When a dog becomes too focused on the environment, other dogs, people, or distractions, the handler can almost disappear from the dog’s mind. The aim is to rebuild that connection so Willow learns to respond to Stella, move with her, and make better choices.
Willow worked really well, and Stella handled the session brilliantly. This foundation work helps build clearer communication, better control, and a much calmer dog over time.
Well done both.

🐾 Would your dog enjoy something new at K9 Solutions?

I’m considering introducing supervised slat treadmill sessions here in Merthyr Tydfil and would love to hear whether local dog owners would be interested.

The treadmill is powered by the dog’s own movement. Sessions would include a gentle introduction, encouragement and rest breaks, with suitability assessed individually.

An extra exercise option alongside your dog’s usual walks and training. 🐶
