***AMENDED POST***

🐴 CHAPS UK – Genetically Colour-Tested Horses & Ponies 🐴

CHAPS UK would like to remind members, exhibitors and judges about our genetically colour-tested registration category and the associated CHAPS UK identification bridle discs.

Some horses and ponies genetically carry recognised coloured genes but may not display the more obvious white patterning traditionally associated with coloured horses. These animals can therefore sometimes appear visually “solid” despite genetically meeting CHAPS UK coloured registration criteria.

To be accepted within this category, horses and ponies must undergo DNA testing at the owner’s expense and test positive for an approved coloured gene in accordance with CHAPS UK registration requirements.

Animals MUST demonstrate some indication that a coloured gene may be present, such as a large white face marking, extended leg markings and/or belly splashes. Prior to any DNA testing being undertaken, members must email CHAPS UK Admin in the first instance, including photographs of the animal from the front, rear, left side and right side, together with any additional photographs that help demonstrate the possible colour traits. Details of any known parentage must also be included. CHAPS UK will review the information provided and advise whether the animal is suitable to proceed for DNA testing.

Once verified and accepted by CHAPS UK, these animals are issued with an official CHAPS UK genetically colour-tested bridle disc. The purpose of the disc is to provide clear visual confirmation that the horse or pony has met CHAPS UK eligibility requirements and is eligible to compete within CHAPS UK-affiliated coloured classes.

We appreciate that this remains a relatively new registration category within the Society and CHAPS UK continues to work towards promoting understanding and consistency regarding genetically colour-tested registrations across all areas of competition.

We thank our members and exhibitors for their continued support of CHAPS UK and for embracing the evolving diversity within coloured horse breeding and competition.
