A report released by Defra has shown that wild birds in the UK are struggling, with severe declines for farmland birds. According to government data, farmland bird populations have fallen by about 62% over the long term and 11% in the short term.

In particular, turtle doves, grey partridges, tree sparrows and starlings appear to be struggling the most.

Research by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and reports from keepers show that areas managed for game shooting provide vital refuges for wildlife, at a time when many species are in steep national decline.

On grouse moors, even with ever increasing and restrictive habitat management practices, upland estates continually deliver increased nesting and fledging of some of our most vulnerable ground nesting birds, which breed at far higher densities than on unmanaged uplands. This is thanks to uneven aged mosaic creation, mitigation from landscape scale wildfire and decreased generalist predation occurrences.

Similarly, lowland partridge and pheasant shoots invest heavily in cover crops, winter feeding and woodland management, which benefit farmland birds, pollinators and small mammals.

The GWCT monitoring demonstrates that songbird numbers and breeding success are consistently higher on keepered estates compared with comparable farmland. In short, while UK biodiversity does face serious challenges, game-managed land is bucking the trend: wildlife is not only surviving, but thriving.
