Despetately looking for a family as poor Orla has spent more time in rescue than she has in a home 😪

2 year old Orla is one of our longest stay resident, the sad reality is shes lived in kennels/rescue most of her young life..she was born in a Spanish rescue and was brought to the UK as a puppy and has since been stuck in limbo 😪

ORLA needs an active, adult only home (no visiting children), a home with experience of nervous dogs.

This stunning girl needs your help to share her post so she can find her own family and her life can begin 🙏🙏🙏🙏

It was when I was a young girl that I realised my affinity with animals. 🐮

I grew up with 2 sisters and as you can imagine, life was not always peaceful!

In those moments when I felt like I wanted to explode, I would ‘go for a walk’.

I actually went to a field close by where there were cows. It always seemed to me that they could sense when I was upset and they would come over and nuzzle me. 💜

I would talk to them and stroke them until I was calmer and thinking more clearly. They never turned their backs or got distracted and although they couldn’t talk back, I felt like I had been listened to.

Of course these days I have the honour of spending every day with animals and I still share my troubles with them. I will always be grateful to the animals in my life.😊

Have you ever been helped emotionally by animals?

I would love to hear your stories. Drop them below so we can collectively thanks our animal friends. 🙏

Deciding to welcome a puppy into your family is a big decision and if it’s your first time, there will be lots to do to prepare for the new arrival! 🐶

Here are some books that will help. 📚

It also covers breed characteristics, preparing to bring puppy home, house training, socialization, controlling aggression and chewing and training.

😁The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa

It’s conveniently arranged in three sections: preparing for your puppy, living with your puppy and problem solving.

Cats have a sense of smell that’s 14 times better than ours! 😲

Being very sensitive to home fragrances myself (I simply can’t use them nowadays), it made me wonder how cats cope and whether they’re actually healthy for cats?🤷‍♀️

What I’ve discovered is this:

Feline asthma is increasing and this is a result of being exposed to volatile organic compounds from air fresheners, incense, cigarette smoke and cleaning products! 😱

Some think the answer lies in so called ‘natural’ products that contain essential oils for fragrance. However some essential oils can be toxic to cats. ☠️

So how do we maintain a fragrant home and keep our feline friends safe?

Veterinarians recommend air purifiers that break down and remove volatile organic compounds from the air and also capture other air pollutants such as dust, pollen and smoke.

Just like us, dogs need proper sleep.😴

A lack of sleep can lead to a poor immune system and lower cognitive function. You may notice that they groom less or opt for fewer enrichment activities than usual, which in turn increases their stress.

But before running to the vet for medication, there are some foods that may be able to help if your pooch has insomnia.

My top 5 are:

🫖Chamomile tea - a compound called apigenin
binds with GABA receptors in the brain,
which induces sleep.

🤎 Walnuts - contain melatonin, serotonin and
magnesium that all promote sleep.

🐟Fatty fish - contain omega 3’s & vitamin D
that regulate serotonin.

🌾Barley grass powder - rich in GABA, calcium,
typtophan, zinc, potassium & magnesium, all
of which, promote sleep.

🍌 Bananas - rich in potassium and magnesium
which help muscles relax.

Mixing some of these in with their usual food could be a much cheaper and more natural solution.

With spring on the horizon it will soon be time for gardening and that can mean lots of hazards for our pets!☠️

🌿Fertilizers, Herbicides, & Pesticides:

Many lawn chemicals contain toxic ingredients that are particularly dangerous if pets eat them directly out of the bag.

Poisoning symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, or in severe cases, can even be fatal.

After treating your lawn, keep pets off the area for the product’s recommended amount of time (typically two days) and lock away any spare.

🤎Cocoa Mulch:

This is popular for its pleasant odor and color but is toxic to pets!

It’s made with cocoa beans which contain the same toxins as chocolate and since this it smells like chocolate, dogs are especially more tempted to eat it.

Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, increased heart rate, and seizures.

🐌Rodenticides and Snail or Slug Baits:

When eaten by our pets, rodenticides or snail and slug baits can cause fatal internal bleeding, tremors, seizures, and organ failure.

Symptoms can take hours to days to develop. Seek immediate veterinary attention if you suspect your pet ate any of these toxins.

🪴Plants:

There are many types of plants, flowers, and vegetables that are toxic to pets.

One of the most dangerous are lilies, which can cause life-threatening kidney failure in cats.

Before planting anything in your garden or bringing plants inside your home, check which are pet friendly.

As a pet sitter I am frequently faced with cats, especially male cats, that don’t drink enough, which can the lead to urinary tract problems.😼

Of course these problems then need to be treated (expensive vet bills) and special (expensive) food is often recommended as part of that treatment!😫

To avoid this costly problem there are a few things you can try to get your cat drinking more.

1. Incorporate wet food in their diet or soak their
biscuits. Water can even be mixed in with wet
food.💧

2. Have multiple water bowls around the home
and try using different shaped containers.
Many cats I know prefer to drink from a glass
or cup rather than a bowl!

3. Refresh water frequently. My own cat
wouldn’t touch water unless it was very fresh!

4. Consider a water fountain but make sure it’s
kept clean, nobody wants to drink mouldy
water!⛲️

5. If all else fails try offering some cat milk or a
meaty broth. Both of these contain lots of
water.

So this myth actually drives me nuts!🤯

To my mind, this is just an excuse people use for keeping their pet fish in a boring glass bowl with no stimulation whatsoever!

Behavioral studies have in fact shown that goldfish can associate sounds with feeding times, operate tiny levers, and even recognize their owners' presence!

Each of these behaviors requires a lengthier memory span than three seconds.

What myths about animals drive you mad? Drop them below so we can bust them together.👇
