Dog's ARE cool but stay curious; there's always room to grow.

Trends are exactly that, trends. Don't be swayed too quickly. Hard work, determination and consistency are always behind the goid stuff no matter what social media shows you.

No one got toned from one gym session.

No one got confident by reading one book.

If you want something good it takes work. You will have to show up in the quiet daily moments.

Real life success > social media likes.

Facebook top contributors are NOT dog trainers. You know your dog and it's in your power to serve them well.

Walks shouldn't be a battle for survival.

If you're struggling with your dog on walks or any kind of reactivity, reach out to a trainer for help.

Find a trainer who shows evidence of;

• Working with dogs like your dog
• Working with dogs with the same problems your dog has
• Shows 'before' video clips (not just descriptions)
• Shows progress during the training process
• Shows video evidence of the positive outcome as a result of training afterwards.

Lio's transformation has been significant and Im so pleased for his owner. She has put in a huge amount of thoughtful work.

Most of all though, I'm pleased for Lio. Seeing him struggle initially was really hard and it is no way to live. Its such a joy to see him enjoy himself now and run, sniff and play exactly how he should be able to.

Reacting to every sight, sound and movement IN your house, is reactivity.

Often owners muss this, especially if they enjoy their dog's 'happy' personality. Its often misinterpreted as being a high drive dog, being 'protective' or being super affectionate.

Its actually reactivity getting practised and strengthened right under your nose with your consent.

Its not healthy and leads to a sleep deprived, twitchy dog. Imagine if you woke 100 times a night at every sound.

Start addressing reactivity in your house first of all and see it for what it really is.

Meet high drive, super strong Winnie.

I spend a lot of time working with strong dogs but Winnie was one of the hardest pullers I've ever walked.

She was completely checked out and over stimulated as soon as the lead appeared. She was in desperate need of having the freedom to run off lead and expel her frantic energy.

Now that's all in place alongside obedience training the final component was sharpening up her walk.

Her owners are now looking forward to their first holiday where she can be off lead and a pleasure to walk. 🩶

Explosive reactivity needs a multi pronged approach.

Each time I work with a new reactive dog, its firstly about understanding what's driving the behaviour. Not all reactivity is the same and causes usually range from fear based responses to frustration or a cross over of both.

Then the work begins building communication and teaching owners and dogs a new skill set that helps them navigate life together.

Now I've been able to start handling Bruno he's shown a softer and more fearful side. We'll never know 100% why he's reactive bit some of the factors certainly include genetics, temperament and a lack of appropriate exposure as a puppy sine he was handed to a rescue at 8 months old with his brother.

Today was a real turning point in seeing him tune in to a handler over checking out and exploding at everything he sees.

If you're struggling with reactivity, get in touch and we can talk about a way forward.

How powerful do you think PLAY is?

If you're not playing effectively with your dog, there's a key piece of your relationship missing.

Play is one of the tools I use in the rehabilitation of reactive dogs. If we're going to tell a dog they can't kick off at the sight of a trigger, I think it's only fair to show them an appropriate outlet for all that energy / frustration / genetic drive.

But its not just that. Play is one of the best ways to introduce and uphold rules and impulse control in a non threatening way. Little boundaries can be established as your game develops together and you can learn to share space, resources and ideas.

Play is were confidence is built or lost and today Bruno saw me and I saw him. Really, we met properly for the first time today and it gave me hope for what's possible for him.

Learn to play well with your dog.

Bruno, a young rescue CaneCorso cross,

has extreme reactivity to people, cars and dogs.
He's anxious, defensive and guards spaces such as the car and his home.

His owner has owned big energetic dogs previously but Bruno has brought his own level of challenge.

He's already worked with a behaviourist who didnt even meet them in person, yet suggested medicating Bruno.

There's lots to unpick for sure.

Today was the first step towards a better life.

If you're struggling with your dog's behaviour message to arrange a call and lets see if I can help.

Build the skill of doing nothing!

If your dog cant lay down and do nothing under distraction you can be sure you won't have a solid recall.

It's a great easy way to practise impulse control and the more chance your dog gets to practise, the better they get.

You should see improvement in a few days and the good news is it will start to impact other areas of life where you struggle with your dog's behaviour.

The best bit is its so easy so grab a coffee and give it a go!

Two lives changed

The idea that 3yr old Karrot would ever be off lead seemed impossible for his owner.

Like many rescued hunting dogs from abroad, his prey drive was so strong it controlled his whole mental state on walks.

Fast forward a few weeks after his owner contacted me and he now gets to run off lead every day.

This problematic footpath with a huge reinforcement history of driving him wild was the final test and they smashed it. I couldn't be happier for this amazing team who deserve every bit of their success.

Trained dogs have more freedom. There it is.

After the first fight, its too late.

Unfortunately, that's the point when a dog trainer is usually called.

In reality, management should be in place before your second dog even arrives. This includes visiting dogs.

Toys, chews and meal times are key triggers for household fights.
Tension can be building right in front of owners eyes if you don't know the signs.

Its the easiest thing to manage meal times carefully from the get go. Dont take unnecessary risks and you're far more likely to get the harmonious household you wanted.
