The dog is rarely the problem, I will help you change so your dog can. If you are getting a puppy or rescue dog and want to get it right from the start, I'll teach you how to behave. If you have a dog with problems, any problems, I'll help you resolve them by teaching you how to behave. All dogs can learn new behaviours, can you?

Recall.

Once again I am drawn back to this subject as I asked a client if their dog had a good recall, they assured me he did and then proved themselves wrong.

My definition of a recall is a dog who comes back straight away when called regardless of distraction, even squirrels!

What does it take to get to that level of success and understanding?

It won't be a surprise when the answer is a lot of hard work under ever increasing levels of distraction, a huge amount of patience and consistency.

As most people don't possess the desire or determination to put that sort of work in, we see dogs with little or no recall running around all over the place causing stress and distress to people and dogs alike.

Shouting my dog is friendly does not cut it, nor does being on your phone or listening to stuff on your headphones whilst your dog does its own thing, but these seem to be the preferred behaviour for some dog owners.

If you love your dog, would you not want to be able to show off how well behaved they are, rather than show off how little you care?

It says so much about the person, how they let their dog behave.

Are you a proud dog owner who takes the responsibility seriously or perhaps you just don't give a toss?

The recall is the most rewarding thing you will ever achieve with your dog, the proudest moment when your dog comes back to you rather than chasing the rabbit or squirrel.

I am often asked how do reactive dogs get on with group sessions and the answer is simple, we find the distance you and your dog can cope at and start from there.

Owners of reactive dogs are usually surprised by the amount of progress they make because I have a simple philosophy, no one is set up or allowed to fail.

I am here to build your confidence through structured interactivity that teaches you how to change your behaviour whilst still having calm and relaxed control.

I also extend an invitation t dog owners to come along without their dog to see for your self what happens, there is no charge for this as I won't be working with you but you will hear and see exactly what happens and you can then make up your mind whether these sessions are something you want to join or would a 121 or home visit be more useful to you.

Group sessions take place again on Saturday 3rd October starting at 9am and meeting at the Bulls Head, Loughborough Road, Thringstone for a walk through Grace Dieu woods and around the ruins.

The session lasts an hour, you will be around other dogs in the group and we will encounter other dogs who are not in the group.

Even reactive dogs cope well because we construct the space and time they need to be able to process. Yes it will start off noisy but that soon reduces as we get into the session.

The fee is £20.00 per dog, payable in cash on the day please.

Family members are welcome if they would like to help you have a better behaved dog.

I bring my 35 years experience for you to learn from, I also work on a 121 basis and offer home visits which really do open your eyes to your dogs behaviour.

I think the biggest thing you will learn is that your dog needs your time, your patience and your understanding. Once I show you what this looks like for your dog, you will have the tools you need to make the difference you have been looking for.

How good is your self control?

You might wonder what that has to do with dog behaviour, it has everything to do with it.

Yesterday I dealt with two dogs fighting each other. Very quickly intervened, very quickly calmed the situation down and the dogs stopped and relaxed.

This is probably most dog owners worst fear and nightmare and a great example of where all reasoning stops and sheer panic takes over.

So why was I able to stay so calm and quiet?

From learning the hard way that anything else won't work. I know dogs and why they can fall out or become ultra competitive.

So I would ask you to have a think about how much talking you do to your dog when asking them to do something.

Is your instruction clear and one to which you have taught the required response?

Read that again please.

If you are waffling and hoping your dog will be able to pick out the important bit that means something, think again.

People can very easily become one of their dogs biggest sources of frustration and confusion.

Thousands of perfectly good dogs are rehomed because of this, where a few changes in the home environment could have made all the difference.

Rescue centres are full and having to put dogs down because so many are not coping with the people they are living with.

If you need help reach out, spend a bit of money or just don't get a dog because dogs deserve so much more than people who won't even try.

Dogs always try their best to fit in, but some need you to make changes so they can cope and fit in.

If you are prepared to ask for help, you will get it. If you don't ask and rely on the internet, you will continue to struggle.

If you have a dog, be the best owner your dog can have. Or don't have a dog.

Can you train a working Patterdale terrier cross to recall from ducks, geese, squirrels and deer?

My client went from a Cane Corso to this dog and encountered what a working terrier is like.

A dog that makes decisions very quickly, will put her wishes first, very stimuli reactive and easy to overload.

So how is this level of recall possible?

As a footnote I can recall my rescue Belgian Malanois from 500 metres chasing a rabbit at full speed.

So how is this level of training achieved?

By teaching the dog that we are aware of her stimulation levels, we are aware of the questions she asks and we answer in good time.

And we recognise and praise her for good choices. And we don't use food as a reward because of her already high stimulation levels.

And I have taught her owner all of this so he can do it every day. Every single day.

The recall is not an obedience exercise, it is all about the relationship you have with your dog and the choices you have taught them to make.

It is about what your dog associates you with, confusion and frustration or clarity and calm?

When I started working with my client,I asked him how far he wants to get this dog, he replied I want her to be the best she can be, so I need to be what she needs me to be.

We are well into that journey and he is amazing himself and is so impressed with how far he and his dog have come.
