Can you train a working Patterdale terrier cross to recall from ducks, geese, squirrels and deer?

My client went from a Cane Corso to this dog and encountered what a working terrier is like.

A dog that makes decisions very quickly, will put her wishes first, very stimuli reactive and easy to overload.

So how is this level of recall possible?

As a footnote I can recall my rescue Belgian Malanois from 500 metres chasing a rabbit at full sp*ed.

So how is this level of training achieved?

By teaching the dog that we are aware of her stimulation levels, we are aware of the questions she asks and we answer in good time.

And we recognise and praise her for good choices. And we don't use food as a reward because of her already high stimulation levels.

And I have taught her owner all of this so he can do it every day. Every single day.

The recall is not an obedience exercise, it is all about the relationship you have with your dog and the choices you have taught them to make.

It is about what your dog associates you with, confusion and frustration or clarity and calm?

When I started working with my client,I asked him how far he wants to get this dog, he replied I want her to be the best she can be, so I need to be what she needs me to be.

We are well into that journey and he is amazing himself and is so impressed with how far he and his dog have come.

What is your dream for you and your dog? What are you prepared to do to achieve it?

Lets have a chat and see if you are made of the right stuff.

I work on a 121 basis, I offer home visits and group dog owner training sessions. I have 35 years experience and have competed at a national level in obedience, tracking and protection work.

Lead pulling.

I am going to come back to this again because it is such a big problem.

There are many layers to it but one of the base principles is this:
Does your dog understand the lead is a boundary?

I often use this analogy to help people understand.

If your dog were tied to a tree, for how long would they pull?

There are many answers but eventually the dog would yield to the fact the tree does not move, the lead does not change and the boundary must be respected.

I am not suggesting you tie your dog to a tree as that does not help with the lead pulling because the tree does not move.

How your dog greets people is also a factor, especially on a walk. Who does your dog associate with over stimulation on a walk?

Who fussed them as a puppy?

If your dog associates people with excitement, they will pull to get to that person, and the chances are, you will let them.

It is the same if your dog pulls you to a popular p*e point on a walk, and you let them.

Stimulation response is a big factor in lead pulling.

In the garden, does your dog chase birds and squirrels?

When off the lead on a walk, does your dog chase birds and squirrels?

So your dog will do the same on the lead as your dog has no stimulation impulse control.

And then your own behaviour. How often are you yanking the lead thinking that will stop the pulling? How often do you get frustrated and shout at your dog for pulling?

Because there are so many factors at play, fixing the lead pulling requires several changes in behaviour and expectation.

There is no quick fix, change takes time and effort.

I think lead pulling is the most common reason people book a 121 training session and they see changes within an hour. Highly recommended!

Just how much does your dog mean to you?

Are you the only person in your family who loves your dog as much, or possibly more than other family members?

Do they even begin to understand just how deep your connection is?

I work with a lot of owners like this and part of my work is to help them prepare for the time when their dog is no longer with them.

When a person has built a life based around their dog and that dog has got them trough tough times, that person needs help to prepare for and then deal with losing their dog.

A persons love for their dog can be a very pure, simple and complete love, and they have come to depend on their dog.

Helping people through this kind of grief needs someone like me who fully understands deep and powerful connections with dogs, mine are family to me.

This is not about dog behaviour or sorting out an issue, this is just about helping people deal with probably the biggest loss in their life and to process the grief.

If you know someone would benefit from this type of help and support, please pass them my details.

Help from someone who really gets it.

Dealing with stress and reactivity.

The next group dog behaviour session is on Saturday 15th August starting at 9am and meeting at the Bulls Head, Loughborough Road, Thringstone LE67 8LR.

In order to believe your dog can change, you have to see it with your own eyes because this then gives you the belief that it is worth the work.

In these sessions you will see your dog change for the better, you will learn why your dog has changed and how you can do the same work to get the same results.

Your dog needs you to know what you are doing so they can change their behaviour.

I help you learn what your dog needs and how to deliver it.

I have 6 places available, you reserve your place by commenting on this post.

The fee is £20.00 per dog payable in cash on the day. Friends and family are welcome.

Innovative thinking.

I have been bitten by dogs many times, I can tell you some stories!

In my line of work it is an occupational hazard, you would think but it is preventable.

But it got me thinking, I remember my first bite and how scared it left me, I looked at dogs from a fear perspective, I was wary and convinced they would bite me.

I was able to gradually recover and go on to understand so much more.

Not everyone can do that because they don't have the knowledge that enables them to make sense of and understand the why.

Dogs may seem unpredictable, dogs can be out of control but they can be managed and understood.

I can put this part of my experience and knowledge to good use.

I am offering a 121 training service for people who are scared of dogs.

To help them better understand dogs, what to look out for and when and what to avoid. This is not about making you like dogs, this is about giving you the tools and knowledge so you can make an informed decision and be better able to make sense of a situation.

If you know someone who is scared of dogs and would like to better understand them so they can be less scared, please pass on my details.

You can message me on WhatsApp on 07890 455001.

Here to help.
