🐾🫧 Bernadoodle Bath 🫧🐾

Sometimes the 'plan' needs to change, not because of behaviour or nerves. But because the dog is mah-hoosive!!
I have groomed this boy from a puppy and he is so tolerant, especially when you remember how long he has to stand for.
So I am patient, and groom what I can, when I can. Not just to keep him comfortable, but because there is so gosh-darn much of him, it is easier for both of us.
Why force a huge dog to stand perfectly still for a 3 hour full groom, or an hour and a half bath and brush, when you can do the exact same job with him feeling safe, comfortable and as relaxed as possible?

What if my dog is reactive/anxious?

This is the safest way I have found to show you what these grooms look like.

Mr Anxious tired to bite me several times here. But out of fear that he might be overwhelmed with what I am doing and I won't listen.

This is an escalation that he has learnt will stop the styling process.

But you can't actually SEE this in the video because the event is only a second long. But you CAN see that I stay calm, he trusts me to continue, he doesn't thrash around.

He doesn't want to hurt me, he wants the groom to stop. We have checked several time with a vet about any pain the process may cause him and the behaviourist agrees that his bucket is simply
VERY FULL.
So I praise him for letting me style a leg.
I praise him when he shakes off his stress.
I praise him for commands before, after, and sometimes durring the styling.

He knows I don't want to cause him discomfort, but he is in defense mode. And defense mode in the past hasn't been enough to stop the process, so he has learnt to escalate QUICKLY.

Understanding the context is KEY. Spotting the signs is CRUCIAL. Listening and reassuring is EVERYTHING

Every now and then you just need to press the reset button with your dogs groom.

This handsome boy would not stop asking for fuss after his groom! He is a right charmer!!
He was making sure that the groom was actually over and I wasn't going to pick up any more equipment. But I was happy to accept the fuss 😊

I have been swept off my feet lately! Thank you so much to everyone for keeping me busy. I haven't done a proper content update in a while.

This is a mixed bag of photos from recent grooms. I've tried to include a little of everything!

Don't put yourself down if you have been too busy to know what day it is, what bin needs to go out this week or which way is up. Your dog's bath or groom shouldn't be something you need to think about. That is why I encourage you to rebook in advance, or they end up like Carla and are too long, can't see, possibly very knotted and stinky! But she is booked in this week with a proper appointment. Get yourself booked in over the summer if you haven't already.

🐾🫧 Local Connections 🫧🐾

This handsome boy is something of a celebrity. Or that must be how he feels. Telling his story involves a dog walker that isn't Auntie Natalie, at least 2 charities, a vet receptionist, vet physiotherapist, a second owner, myself and a hairdresser!

If anyone knows his story, please feel free to pass on this post so his original owner can see how handsome he turned out and how happy and healthy he still is.

He isn't the youngest pup in the pack, but a fresh hair cut has him looking younger, slimmer and cheekier!
