Good morning everyone 🌞
I have been absent on here this past week or so as there have been some big changes for me at home.

My darling Mum, who sadly has Alzheimers, has moved in with us permanently so i can care for her. Its been a big adjustment for us, my lovely Dad also, but we are all doing well and Mum is happy! 🥰

Now i'm Mum's carer i will have to reduce the amount of grooming that i do but im hoping to get some care organised asap when i see her social worker later this week.
Mum is unable to stand or mobilise by herself anymore and she has had several falls lately, one of which fractured her wrist, bless her, and so im unable to leave her on her own at all.

My super Dad has cared admirably for Mum for nearly 5 years since she was diagnosed with dementia and he really has been brilliant! This was not an easy decision but needs must now that Mum needs a lot of physical help to get up & about.
I worked nearly 20 years in elderly care before becoming a dog groomer, supporting mostly residents with dementia and although im a little rusty we are getting there and doing pretty well!

My Mum really loves all her 'grand-doggy's' & they all love her and they are a lovely source of both amusement & comfort to her 🥰

Im having the next couple of weeks or so off work at least to help settle Mum in but im hopeful i can be back in my salon soon albeit it will be far less.
Having to cut back on how many hours i spend grooming means im going to have to let some of my lovely clients go and honestly that really does sadden me 😔
And i will likely be grooming at different times too to fit around Mums routine.

I will still try to groom those dogs that have been with me for many years, the elderly ones and those with severe anxiety or fear aggression issues but for now i wont be able to take any new clients on.

I will be contacting all of my current clients individualy so please bear with me and i will be in contact with you in the next 2-3 days.

Today is my precious Mums 74th birthday and so we will have a good day celebrating with her! 🎂🎂🎂

Sweet Cockapoo boy Ronnie 💙

Ronnie is a very sweet but also a very fearful boy but one thing i particularly love doing in my salon is helping scared dogs to grow in confidence when being groomed.
It was only Ronnie's third groom with me today but he is already starting to feel safe & more confident and he did really well being blow dried today, as you will see on the video i post next! 🥰

My sweet friends Leo & Lulu 💙🩷

French bulldog boy Leo has been coming to me for many years now and i absolutely adore him, he is bonkers but such a fun fella!
Grooming really use to scare Leo though but i quickly realised that his two main fears were being up on the grooming table & being blow dried.
So i just towel dry him thoroughly after his bath before popping a cosy towelling robe on him whilst i groom his sister Lulu, and he loves being groomed now! 🥰
Leo has always enjoyed a bath and as soon as im prepping his shampoo he puts his front legs on the tub so i can help him in!

Once im finished grooming Lulu, Leo is pretty much dry already so get on the floor with him which he loves, i trim his nails, wipe out his ears & wrinkles and give him a good going over with my deshedding tools.
I do adore his cute face! 😊

I always love to help scared & anxious dogs to become confident when in my salon and Leo is a good example of a dog i have had success with. Im very happy that he is now happy as is his lovely family! 😊

Leo's sister, beautiful Spaniel Lulu is also super in my salon as she completed one of my 'Puppy Pamper & Play' courses as a young puppy.
I designed them to be fun for young puppies that are 12-14 weeks old to help them understand the grooming process in a very gentle, loving & fun way.

Lulu is a star pupli! Once dry i dont even have to put any table straps on her as she stands so calmly for me and she gets rewarded with lots of her favourite tasty treats for being such a good girl! 🍩
I couldnt resist popping a little bow in her top knot today, so adorable! 😍

Hello everyone, finaly summer is on the way and i for one cant wait!! 🌞

I have had a few weeks of being quite unwell and although i always try to keep going as i really love my job, there were some days i was unable to work due to migraines and i also messed up my diary a bit lately too resulting in clients turning up that i hadnt written in straight away and i had other dogs here already.
I just want to say a big THANK YOU to those lovely clients who i messed about. You were all so very kind & understanding and i really do appreciate that & your patience as i got you all booked back in 🥰

For those that dont know I have a chronic condition called Fibromyalgia which causes me a lot of pain & exhaustion every day but i do push myself to continue to work with it as i truly love to groom and spend time with all my sweet doggy clients! 🐶
But the fibro also causes me terrible 'brain fog' and that means my memory is pretty poor and i get easily muddled which can be incredibly embarrassing when i forget to put grooming appointments in my diary.
I have had a few clients turn up over the past couple of weeks who had booked with me but i couldnt groom their dogs as i had others here. I was mortified honestly.

I really am so sorry, i truly appreciate each & every one of my clients and i dont mean to mess any of you about at all.
I promise to do better, thank you for your patience 😊

I have had a lot on and havent been posting my grooms either so here are some of the dogs i have groomed over the past few weeks.

REHABILITATION GROOMING 🐶

Shih tzu boy Gizmo, on the photo's below, is a bit of an extra special boy, bless him and his Mum & Nan travel all the way from Manchester every 3 months so i can groom him! 🥰

Sadly poor Gizmo suffered terrible abuse as a puppy, he was beaten & stabbed 😔 Thankfully though Gizmo was rescued and then adopted by his lovely Mum but because of the trauma he remains a very fear-aggressive little boy.

Because of his fear-aggression Gizmo's Mum struggled to find a groomer in Manchester who was both willing & able to take him on. His coat continually grows and his Mum had to have him sedated & clipped off twice at a vets but it was just too expensive to be done as often as he needed plus with him being sedated he would never be able to learn that grooming is nothing to be frightened of.

Dogs with fear issues like Gizmo can be helped and although they will always be fear-aggressive owners can learn what triggers their dog issues specificaly and how to manage their behaviour to avoid anyone getting hurt.

When Gizmo first came to me he really was very badly matted, literaly from nose to tail, as you can see in the photo below.
His Mum was quite embarrassed and kept apologising but i reassured her and told her that i never judge owners here, im just happy that i could help Giz to feel clean & comfortable.

Anxious dogs that have regular, gentle & positive grooming experiences often go on to become more confident in general!

Sweet Miss Daisy 🩷

I dont often get good photo's of Daisy as she hates it when im trying to take some and puts her head down, but bless her, she is getting old and has limited sight now so she doesnt see that im taking them so now i get lots of good ones!!! 🥰

Daisy has been coming to me for 10 years+ now i think and i truly adore her and her lovely Mum who i really enjoy catching up with after Daisy's groom! 😊
I love all my long term doggy clients but there is also a sadness that comes with seeing them get old, i always wish that they could live as long as we do 😔

Sweet Miss Daisy is pretty deaf & has some doggy dementia now too and the last few grooms she has had have unsettled her a little which is very common because of the dementia as it presents in much the same way as human dementia sufferers do.
So i take things extra slow for Daisy, i catch her eye & smile at her regulary and im always touching her to reassure her when she gets a bit worried. She does still love having some tasty treats and she gets lots if im honest but she deserves them and they help soothe her a little!

Some groomers dont like to continue grooming dogs when they get quite elderly +/ have dementia, one i spoke to only recently said she was worried one of her elderly dog clients may pass away during the groom because he was so stressed, and although i sort of understand that, i would always much prefer my older doggy clients to stay with me so they are still somewhere familiar, with familiar smells and a familiar person who truly loves them ❤️
Yes of course, it can be more of a worry grooming an elderly dog and you do have to take more care and often some extra time with them but honestly for those dogs that need that extra support & love, having that with a groomer they already know, is just so important for their wellbeing.
I dont think Miss Daisy always remembers who i am during her groom but thats ok, i know who she is and i love her 🩷

I will always happily groom Miss Daisy even though it makes me sad to see her a bit confused or worried because i love her & feel i owe her that continuation if care, and i hope i see her for many more years to come yet 🥰

HOW TO GROOM YOUR DOODLE 🐶
Or indeed any curly, longer length or thicker coated dog coat

The grooming tools that Doodle owners need really depend on the coat type that your Doodle has.
Some Doodles have very thick coats whilst others are thinner or wiry to the touch, some have fairly straight coats & others are very wavy & fluffy or have tight curls.

There are 5 items Doodle owners should have, to make daily grooming as easy & quick as possible for you and pleasant, pain free for your dog.
🐶 A slicker brush
🐶 A paddle brush
🐶 A leave in conditioning spray
🐶 A matt picker
🐶 A metal comb

SLICKER BRUSH
Generaly for most Doodle coats you need a long pinned slicker brush to start with, one who's pin can get right down the length of your Doodles coat to their skin.
I have seen so many Doodles who have their top coat brushed out well but underneath is badly matted or completely felted.

Slickers help to remove small knots and separate the coat ready for combing.
Please remember though that SLICKER BRUSHES ARE FOR COAT NOT SKIN.
You dont want to be inadvertently scratching your dog and making their skin sore by brushing your dog with long strokes on their skin. You also need to be extra careful around the face so you dont poke the pins into their eyes or nose accidentally, or scratch them around thinner skinned areas on their belly, groin or inside the legs.
Professional groomers use slicker brushes in a 'PAT & PULL' METHOD.
Pat the brush gently onto the dog then pull it gently through the coats length, away from the skin.

CONDITIONER
Spritz on a little leave in spray conditioner on any knots you find whilst combing & tease them out gently with the slicker.
There are many different brands available.
Once you have removed any knots you can then give your dog a very light spritz all over, brushing it through the whole coat, to freshen it and leave a film on the coat which will help make the next brushing session easier.

METAL COMBS
The most important tool that you need is a metal dog comb that you must use every time you have finished brushing the coat through with the slicker.
The comb will help you to find any little area's of knotting you may have missed and hetting those little knots out helps prevent matting.
If you can then gently tease them out with the comb thats great otherwise break the matt up into smaller sections with a matt picker before brushing out.
You can snip them knots out if needed but always use a small pair of scissors, manicure scissors would work well, and always point them away from your dog skin though to avoid nicking them.

Professional groomers need to be able to get a comb through the coat if the owner wants their dog left in a fuller, longer coat so regular & thorough grooming at home in between appointments will help to ensure they can do this.
If all knots are removed regulary from your Doodles coat it will not become badly matted and wont need clipping off short, its as simple s that!

PADDLE BRUSH
Finaly a paddle type brush with plastic/ rubber coated tips on the pins is ideal to use for a final brush over as its very comfortable for the dog and they usualy enjoy it.

My sweet friend Miss Molly is in the photo below and her Mum keeps her brushed & combed out beautifully so im able to give her a cute, fluffy 'teddy-bear' clip that her Mum loves! Isnt she gorgeous! 🥰
