Helping Children Through Pet Loss

For many children, losing a beloved pet is their very first experience of grief. It can be confusing, upsetting and difficult to understand, especially when their little hearts are hurting too.

At Rainbow Bridge, I believe every member of the family deserves to feel supported when saying goodbye, no matter how small they are. 🌈

If you find yourself needing our services and have little ones at home, please let me know. There are little things we can do to help make this incredibly difficult time a little gentler for them.

🍇 A little reminder from our grapevine…

We had a very disappointing yield from the grapes that surround the crematorium this year. But now autumn has arrived, the vine is slowly falling back to sleep for the winter.

Resting.
Recovering.
Mending.
Getting ready for the years to come.

And perhaps there’s a little lesson in that for us too…

Be kind to yourself.

We can’t always bloom and blossom. Some years are harder than others.

And when we’re grieving, we can sometimes expect far too much from ourselves. We think we should be feeling better, doing more, or somehow moving forward when our hearts simply aren’t ready.

But grief needs time too.

Sometimes mending doesn’t mean going back to how we were before. It means learning to carry our loss, making space for the memories, and slowly finding a way to grow around the ache.

Just like our grapevine, we all have seasons where we need to slow down, rest and heal.

That doesn’t mean we’ve failed.
It doesn’t mean we’ve stopped growing.
And it certainly doesn’t mean we won’t bloom again.

Sometimes we just need a little time and space beneath the surface before we’re ready to come back stronger — with more to give, more to grow and, hopefully, a few more grapes along the way. 🍇

So if you’re finding this year difficult, especially if you’re grieving.

Be gentle with yourself.
You don’t have to bloom every season.
Resting, grieving and mending are all part of growing too. 🌈

“Why isn’t my partner grieving like I am?”

This is something we hear so often after the loss of a beloved pet.

You’ve lost the same pet.
You shared the same memories.
You loved them just as much.

So why does it feel like you’re falling apart while your partner seems to be coping?

The truth is… there is no one way to grieve.

One of you might cry every day, struggle to sleep, feel angry, guilty or completely lost.

The other might seem to carry on as normal. They may return to work, keep busy, talk about your pet without crying, or even seem like they’re “okay”.

That doesn’t mean they loved your pet any less.

Sometimes grief is loud.
Sometimes grief is quiet.
Sometimes it comes in waves.
And sometimes it gets tucked away because that’s how someone manages to get through the day.

You may want to talk about your pet constantly, while your partner finds it too painful to talk.

You may want to look at photographs and remember every little thing, while they need some distance from those memories.

Neither way is wrong.

Grief can bring sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, numbness, disbelief, loneliness and a huge sense of longing. It can even affect your sleep, appetite, energy and ability to concentrate.

And it doesn’t follow a timetable.

Over time, grief doesn’t necessarily disappear. Instead, we learn to carry our love and our loss differently. We slowly find ways to live alongside the sadness, while still keeping the love and memories with us.

So if you’re grieving differently from your partner, please try not to measure their grief against your own.

Their grief doesn’t have to look like yours for their love to have been just as real.

And if you’re struggling because you feel like you’re grieving alone, please know that you’re not unusual, and you’re not “doing grief wrong”.

There is no right way to grieve your best friend.

Be gentle with each other. You are both hurting — you may just be showing it in different ways.

THE 5 STAGES OF GRIEF AFTER LOSING A PET

When we lose a pet, we don’t just lose an animal — we lose a member of our family, a companion, a routine and a little piece of our everyday life.

Grief can feel overwhelming, and sometimes it can feel completely different from one day to the next.

You might feel denial, wondering how this can really be happening.
You might feel anger — at yourself, the vets, the situation or even the world.
You might find yourself bargaining, thinking “if only I had…” or “what if I had done more?”
Then comes the deep sadness and emptiness, when the reality of their absence really hits.
And eventually, acceptance — not forgetting them or “moving on”, but learning to carry their love and memories with you.

But please remember… there is no right way to grieve and there is no timetable. 🐾

Are we open today and Bank Holiday Monday?

The simple answer is yes… but no!

We are not open to visitors due to strict council regulations, but our collection service is still running as normal.

So, if you unfortunately need our services over the Bank Holiday, please don’t worry. Just call or text us and we will be there when you need us.

We know losing a much-loved pet doesn’t wait for normal opening hours, weekends or bank holidays — and neither do we.

🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈

Today we remember the pets who may no longer be by our side, but who will always be a part of our hearts.

For some, today brings back happy memories of wagging tails, wet noses, muddy paws and the little things that made our pets so wonderfully them.

For others, it may bring tears, because their loss is still raw — whether it happened yesterday or many years ago.

Our pets are never just pets. They are family. They are our companions, our comfort, our reason to smile and, sometimes, the one who was there when nobody else was.

So today, light a candle, look through those photographs, tell their stories, shed a tear, or simply say their name.

Because remembering them is another way of keeping their memory alive.
