Did you see the story about Larry the Downing Street cat having surgery?

He is 19 years old and appears to have sailed through the anaesthetic and procedure to remove a cyst from his hip.

Which is brilliant, not just for him but also to highlight how, when it comes to caring for our pets and particularly anaesthetics, age is just a number!

It can be really daunting when your vet advises treatment under an anaesthetic for an older pet but the vast majority do brilliantly and the risks are far outweighed by the benefits.

Anesthesia in pets is very safe. Studies (linked below) consistently show this and the staff at your local practice will be very experienced in it, and particularly in caring for senior and geriatric pets because this is a time of life when health issues are common and surgeries are needed. Dental disease, for example, or lump removals like Larry's.

However, we do take operations very seriously and put many layers of safety for your pets.

Most vets will run blood tests before the procedure to ensure good organ function and place their patients on a drip for extra support.

The medications we use are very well researched, highly effective and the doses will be carefully tailored to your pet.

During the procedure most clinics will monitor your pets system in a variety of ways, including their respiration, heart rate, ECG, oxygen and C02 levels and blood pressure. There will also be a well qualified member of staff, usually a Registered Veterinary Nurse, monitoring their vitals manually, and they will stay by their side for the entirety of the operation and until they have fully recovered.

We would never say that anaesthesia carries no risk but we do everything we can to keep it as safe as possible.

So if your vet has advised a procedure for your older pet, please don't discount it just because of their age!

🚨 PYOMETRA 🚨

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen an unprecedented number of unspayed female dogs needing emergency surgery for pyometra.

So, we thought it was a good time to talk about something we’re often asked about: should I spay my dog? 🐶❤️

🩺 What is pyometra?

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that can occur in entire female dogs, often following a season.

Treatment usually means emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries, alongside IV fluids, antibiotics, pain relief and hospitalisation.

✂️ Why consider an elective spay?

Spaying can:

❤️ Prevent pyometra
❤️ Prevent unwanted pregnancies
❤️ Stop seasons and associated bleeding
❤️ Prevent diseases of the ovaries and uterus
❤️ Potentially reduce the risk of certain mammary tumours

But spaying isn’t automatically the right choice for every dog.

There can also be disadvantages, including increased risk of weight gain and, depending on the individual dog, breed and timing, conditions such as urinary incontinence or certain orthopaedic problems.

That’s why timing and whether to spay at all should be an individual decision.

🏥 Planned surgery vs emergency surgery

An elective spay is performed when your dog is fit and well, allowing us to plan the procedure and anaesthetic carefully.

With pyometra, your dog is already unwell and fighting a serious infection. Surgery can be more complicated, the anaesthetic risk is higher and hospitalisation and intensive treatment are often required.

And importantly, emergency pyometra treatment is significantly more expensive than a planned elective spay.

We’re not suggesting that cost should be the reason you spay your dog — but preventing pyometra can mean avoiding a life-threatening illness, emergency surgery and a much bigger veterinary bill.

🐾 Not sure what is right for your dog?

Book an appointment with one of our vets and we can talk through:

• Your dog’s breed, age and lifestyle
• The pros and cons of spaying
• The best timing if you do decide to spay
• Your individual dog’s risks
• Alternatives if you decide not to spay

Our aim is not to tell you what you should do, but to give you the information you need to make the right decision for your dog.

📞 Contact the practice to arrange a chat with one of our vets on 01623620784.

And remember — if your entire female dog becomes lethargic, off her food, drinks or urinates more than usual, vomits, develops vaginal discharge or has a swollen/painful abdomen, please contact a vet promptly.

Pyometra can be an emergency. ❤️🐾

💚 SENIOR CITIZEN SEPTEMBER SERIES

During each week of September we will post about senior citizen pets.

Season 1. Episode 4: Benefits of complimentary treatment

🐾 Could complimentary treatments help your pet with osteoarthritis 🐾

Alongside veterinary treatment & home adaptations, some pets may benefit from a complementary therapies.

Examples of complementary therapies include:

✨️ Physiotherapy & massage: targeted stretches & exercises to help ease muscle tension & improve flexibility.

✨️ Hydrotherapy: controlled, low-impact form of exercise using heated water to aid in improved muscle strength & joint range of motion.

✨️ Acupuncture: helps to stimulate nerves, relieve pain, reduce inflammation & promote natural healing.

✨️ Laser therapy: A non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths to help reduce pain, decrease swelling & speed up tissue healing.

🐾 Potential benefits of complimentary treatment include

🐶 Improved mobility – aiding pets in the ability to move more comfortably & maintain function.

💪 Supporting muscle strength – help to maintain muscles that support painful joints.

⚖️ Better weight management – Aid in maintaining a healthy body condition score & supporting comfortable living.

🧘‍♀️ Reducing stiffness and tension – Can help to reduce muscle tightness &improve mobility.

☺️ Better quality of life – Helping pets to feel more comfortable will allow more engagement in everyday life activities, improving happiness.

💜 It is important to remember every pet is unique. An appropriate treatment plan should be created to be tailored to your pets’ individual needs, stage of osteoarthritis and overall health.

🐾 Complimentary therapy should be used alongside veterinary care, not instead of it. If you have noticed your cat or dog becoming slower, struggling with day to day activities or not enjoying their usual activities, please get in touch with our veterinary team 🐾
