🐾 Meet Dino 🐾

When this little Frenchie cross suddenly couldn't move any of his legs, his family were understandably terrified.

His vets referred him to us as an emergency, and he was seen by our surgeon Will.

🔴 Dino was tetraplegic, unable to stand or walk on any of his four legs

🟣 An urgent MRI showed a slipped disc at C3/C4 in his neck, pressing on his spinal cord and cutting off the signals to all four legs

🔵 Will performed emergency surgery, operating through the underside of the neck to reach the spinal cord and remove the disc

🟢 Less than a week later, Dino is back on his feet, trotting down the corridor with his tail wagging

He's now home with his family on strict rest while he carries on recovering. We couldn't be prouder of him.

For referring vets: Dino had an acute C3/C4 disc extrusion with tetraplegia and underwent ventral slot decompression. Cases like this benefit from urgent assessment, and we're always happy to take a call to talk one through.

Something we're really proud of: referring vets across the North West keep trusting us with their most complex orthopaedic and neurology patients. Hips, spines, tricky fractures, and a lot of very happy dogs heading home.

Now we're adding a new RVN to our nursing team, and we'd love it to be you.

🔵 The role
A brand new position bridging our day and our evening. Theatre, anaesthesia and recovery, MRI and CT, and caring for our inpatients alongside our specialists every day.

🟣 The hours
Four 10 hour shifts a week. Mondays off, no weekends, no bank holidays. Friday runs into the evening and we're flexible on the rest.

📚 £750 CPD allowance, two days' CPD leave and in house CPD from our specialists
✅ RCVS and VDS fees paid

🐾 Patient of the Week: Cody 🐾

Bouncy, handsome, and very much a cocker spaniel about it.

Cody came to us lame on his left forelimb after an ordinary bit of running about. Nothing that should break a bone.

But spaniels carry a hidden risk in their elbows.

What was going on:
🔴 Non weight bearing, with pain and swelling at the left elbow
🔴 CT confirmed a lateral condylar fracture. In plain terms, the outer knuckle at the bottom of the upper arm bone had broken away
🔴 We suspected an underlying HIF (humeral intracondylar fissure), a crack inside the bone that never fully knits and leaves the elbow vulnerable under everyday loads

Why CT mattered:
🟣 A precise picture of the fracture for surgical planning
🟣 Confirmation of what was happening inside the bone
🟣 Most importantly, it let us assess the other elbow. HIF is often bilateral, and knowing that changes the conversation we have with owners

For our referring vets: a spaniel that fractures a condyle on minimal trauma should raise a flag for HIF, and we would always advocate imaging both elbows.

The fix:
🔵 A 4.5mm cortical screw across the condyle to compress the fracture and stabilise the fissure
🔵 An anatomical LEAP plate from Fusion Implants to lock the fragments and resist further movement
🔵 These plates are contoured for the spaniel elbow, cutting surgical time considerably. Better for the patient, better for everyone

The outcome:
🟢 Cody has never looked back and is back to full walks, full bounce, and full spaniel

Caught properly and fixed properly first time, these cases do very well.

🐾 Meet Otto, a gentleman in every sense of the word!

Otto came to us at Dogwood Referrals earlier this year with severe hip dysplasia that medication was no longer keeping on top of.

🦴 **What was going on:**
Otto had already had his left hip replaced. The right had become the problem, and you can see why on his X ray. The arrows point out the arthritis, the misshapen femoral head, the hip sitting out of its socket, and the loss of muscle on that side from months of not using the leg properly.

🔧 **The fix:**
A total hip replacement. It is a big operation that needs specialist equipment and training, so it is never a decision taken lightly.

✨ **The outcome:**
Surgery on that painful right hip went well, and Otto has gone from strength to strength on his brand new bionic hips.

We are not convinced he would make it through the airport scanners on his next holiday though! ✈️😄

🩺 For referring vets, hip replacement is something we consider when dysplasia stops responding to medical management. Otto is a nice example of how well these dogs can do, even second time around.

🐾 Patient of the week: Dolly 🌟

Dolly’s family noticed something wasn’t right after a running injury. Her right ankle started giving way with a strange “jerk-like” motion each time she put weight on it. She was referred straight to us for a specialist opinion.

What was going on: standard X-rays weren’t enough to find the problem, so we used stressed views, gently pulling the foot and leg in opposite directions to show exactly where the instability was hiding. This revealed one of the small joints in Dolly’s ankle had become unstable, letting her foot drift inward. It’s a genuinely unusual injury, and one that isn’t well documented.

The fix: two screws placed across the joint, linked with wire to hold everything secure. Afterwards, Dolly wore an ankle brace to protect the repair, which she tolerated brilliantly, and this was gradually loosened over time to help rebuild strength through the joint.

At her eight week progress check, Dolly was doing fantastically and is now fully recovered and back to loving her exercise. Her family were kind enough to leave us this review 👇

A really enjoyable evening 💙

Last week we welcomed vets from practices across the region for our CPD evening, “Refer or Wait? Navigating Spinal Disease in Dogs and Cats”.

We started with food and a proper catch up before the talks, which is always one of the nicest parts of hosting these. It is good to put faces to the voices we usually only hear on the phone.

Tom then talked through the decisions that sit behind a spinal case: how to grade a patient, what imaging really adds, and when surgery genuinely changes the outcome.
Emma, Alex and Kerry followed with physiotherapy in the post-operative patient, covering conservative management, hydrotherapy and how a rehabilitation plan actually progresses week by week.

The feedback for both sessions was excellent, and the topics people suggested are already shaping our autumn event. We will share the date soon.

If you have a spinal case you are not sure about, please do give us a ring. There is no charge for talking something through, and quite often the answer is that the patient can stay with you 💙

Refer or Wait? Navigating Spinal Disease in Dogs and Cats

Tom will work through the decision points: the signs that warrant referral, the cases that can reasonably be watched, and the red flags that change everything.

Emma, Alex and Kerry, our ACPAT-qualified chartered physiotherapists, then cover what happens next, for both the conservatively managed patient and the post-operative one. Rehabilitation is where good outcomes are won and lost, and it rarely gets the airtime it deserves.

You will leave with a clearer sense of when to pick up the phone and what to tell the owner while they decide. CPD certificates will be emailed to everyone who attends.

Congress season! 🩺💙

This week Tom has been at the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) Annual Scientific Meeting in Liverpool, one of the highlights of the European veterinary surgery calendar. It’s brought together specialist surgeons for talks, case discussions and the latest advances in small animal surgery.

It’s also been a lovely full circle moment, as Liverpool is where Tom completed his specialist surgical training. It’s been great catching up with old colleagues and mentors, all against the backdrop of the sunny Liverpool docks.

Days like these are exactly why continuing professional development matters so much to us. Staying at the cutting edge means we can keep bringing the very best options to our patients.

🐾 Patient of the week: Skye

Skye’s family noticed her back leg was a bit off — nothing dramatic, just slowly getting worse — until her ankle suddenly gave way. Her vet referred her straight to us for a specialist opinion.

What was going on: the ligaments at the back of her ankle had worn down over time, causing one of the ankle joints to collapse. It’s a change we see fairly often in middle-aged collies. Splints and supports don’t help here — the ligaments won’t heal, and the forces going through it are too great.

The fix: a partial tarsal arthrodesis — fusing the affected lower joints while keeping normal movement in the main ankle joint.

Ten weeks on, Skye’s X-rays showed exactly what we hoped for, and she’s back to her brilliant self. Her family were kind enough to leave us this review 👇
