We are very excited to introduce to you the newest addition in our stock room - The new Haygain Breather nebulizer! 💨

If you know anyone with a nebuliser for their horse, you may know that it can be quite a financial investment with some costing over £800. The new Haygain breathers are available for £450!

If your horse has been diagnosed with equine asthma, they most likely would benefit from a nebuliser.

Clinical signs of equine asthma include:
🐴 Nasal discharge
🐴 Coughing
🐴 Increased respiratory rate and effort
🐴 Decreased tolerance to exercise
🐴 Poor performance

Yesterday, our vet Emily performed the first castrate of the season! The lovely Rambo was very brave during his procedure 🤍

We start castrating horses in October when the weather is cooler and the flies cause less bother 🪰

A reminder that we are currently running a castrate offer:
£200 for a standing castrate - this includes all medication, sedation and the surgical procedure.

To benefit from the deal your horse must be:
- Less than 4 years old
- Up to date for tetanus (anti toxin can be given with an additional fee)

Please note, this price does not include the visit fee.

🪾🌱🌰 Acorn poisoning in horses 🌰🌱🪾

Acorns, including leaves and branches, can be poisonous to horses.

Acorns have a bitter taste, so poisoning is rare - but if a horse lacks forage or there are many acorns on pasture, they may ingest them.

Acorns contain a substance called Tannic acid, which can cause serious damage to the gastrointestinal system and kidneys.

Signs of acorn toxicity include:
Lethargy
Depression
Dehydration
Reduced appetite
Lying down more
Colic
Diarrhoea with blood
Constipation
Mouth ulcers

To prevent acorn toxicity, please ensure all horses have adequate forage at all times and clear acorns from pasture. Check fields for acorn trees before turning them out.

If you suspect your horse has eaten acorns, please contact your vet immediately. We are available 24/7 on 0161 643 7724 🩺📞🐴

For the month of October, we are bringing back our castrate offer!

Just £200 for a standing castration; this includes medication and sedation! The usual cost of this is £270 +!

Please note, the cost does not include the visit charge of £55.

For your horse to be castrated under sedation with local anaesthetic, they must be under the age of 3. Horses over the age of 3 require a general anaesthetic.

Horses must be vaccinated for tetanus; if not, tetanus antitoxin will be administered at an additional cost.

October brings the cooler weather and a decrease in flies, making it the perfect time to get your colts castrated!

A colic episode can be an incredibly stressful time for owners. Here’s some things that you can do to help your horse, whilst you wait for your vet to arrive:

⛑️ Human safety is always a priority around horses. If your horse wants to go down / roll, please let them and stay out of their way. Keep yourself safe!
 
🪢 If it is safe to do so, remove all obstacles from your horses stable, such as rugs and hay nets which they could get stuck in. 

🌾 Take away all food, leave water in

💊 Please do not give them any medications or at home remedies. This not only delays veterinary intervention, medication could mask signs of pain, and means that our vets may not be able to give their medication of choice. 

🚶‍♀️ Don’t excessively in hand walk them, if a horse does not want to move, please don’t make them. Sometimes gentle in hand walking is encouraged, but speak to your vet first.

💦 Have some buckets of water ready for your vet, these always come in handy for a colic case. 

Signs of colic include:
* Sweating
* Rolling 
* Looking at abdomen
* Pawing at the ground 
* Reduced faecal output 
* Restlessness 
* Decreased appetite 
* Kicking belly

Today our vets Peter and Emily attended BEVA congress, where equine vets from across the country (and beyond!) gather to discuss various topics regarding equine health and welfare.

Between them, Peter and Emily attended lectures and discussions regarding:
🫏Donkey health and welfare
🩹 Wound management and closure
🩺 Prevention of injury in equine athletes
💊 Management of equine pain and protecting patients
🐴 Equine welfare

They both made lots of notes and are ready to share their new knowledge with the other vets tomorrow - Our vet Jenny even made an appearance in a lecture!
(They also took full advantage of the freebies, and the office will be freshly stocked with pens and snacks 🍬)

Our vets attend numerous CPD events a year to ensure that they are up to date on the latest advancements in equine veterinary medicine and care, to ensure that we can provide the best service for you and your horses 💚
