The Pawer of Love dog training

The Pawer of Love dog training I am someone who is passionate about showing people how to support their environmentally sensitive dogs who need space from other dogs.

I also help people to give their dogs more freedom by teaching a reliable recall that works. I specialize in dog-dog reactivity and in teaching a recall that works. I offer 1-2-1 training in person and online.

It might look like this dog is just chilling.

He isn't.

He is alert and wants to keep an eye on what is happening in the environment.

Signs:

ears up

looking around

sudden head movement towards something

moving nose (he is getting information through scents)

Give space to dogs like this.

Solar Eclipse. Keep your dog safe.

Changes in light can cause behaviour change in dogs.

Restlessness.

Confusion.

Anxiety.

There's a risk that they will be disoriented.

Keep them indoors or walk them on the lead.

And enjoy this celestial event safely.

Not every dog wants to be touched even if they approach you. Wiggles can be submissive sometimes, even if she knows you.

If you meet a dog who behaves this way, don't touch them.

Give them space.

If someone says you can say hello to their dog, but you see this behaviour, don't approach them.

Why?

Body language tells you everything.

Low tail carriage, liplicks, low body posture and stopping away from me = please don't touch me.

Here we go again! Sigh.

There is a dog at the other end of the field that your reactive dog just noticed.

You are already worried about what's going to come.

You shorten the lead.

You are struggling to get your dog's attention.

You tighten the lead more hoping to avoid another scene.

All in vain.

Your dog is barking and lunging.

Again.

You are struggling to regain control of the situation.

You are embarrassed by the judgmental looks and comments.

You feel that you have tried everything but nothing worked.

Do you want this situation to play out totally differently where your dog is calm and focused?

I can help.

Let's chat.

Dogs are not stubborn. We just need to change something to help them to listen.

Real case study.

An 8-month old spaniel started growling and snapping when anyone approached her bed in the evening. This was a new behaviour.

Since the dog industry is unregulated, I am certain that there are some 'trainers' out there who would start with changing the behaviour straight away without investigating it further.

We need to consider things like her age (adolescent dog), what is happening during this period (for instance the second fear phase), any negative experience on or around the bed, phantom pregnancy and, of course, pain.

Pain plays a huge role when it comes to sudden behaviour change.

The reason for the behaviour change?

Their previous 'trainer' told them to put the dog on a slip lead. It tightened around her neck and she had some musculoskeletal pain as a result.

She didn't want to be touched around that area and kept people away by growling and snapping.

Aversive tools can cause so much damage to your dog. Physical as well as emotional.

Do you want to work with someone who uses kind, up to date methods and consider the big picture when it comes to behaviour modification?

Let's chat.

Do you want to change your dog's behaviour?

Instead of asking

How do I stop this?

Ask: Why is this behaviour happening?

Instead of dealing with the behaviour you see,

target the underlying cause (fear, pain etc.)

Instead of suppressing the behaviour with yanking on the lead, shouting or aversive tools,

change their emotion and the environment to teach them alternative behaviours.

It's time to move on from old school training and learn science based, human ways to help our dogs to fit into our society.

Ready?

I can show you tried and tested ways to help your dog.

Let them sniff.

Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors (depending on breed).

We have 6 million.

We'll never understand the word they 'see' when they sniff.

Benefits of sniffing:

🐶 Mental workout. Processing scents is tiring mentally and, consequently, physically.

🐶 Stress relief. Sniffing has a calming effect: it lowers heart rate and releases dopamine. Perfect for anxious, fearful dogs.

🐶 They can get information about their environment, such as dogs who were there, when, their age, s*x, health condition.

Don't rush them on the walk. Let them sniff.
