🐾 Buster’s Big Night Out in Prestwich 🐾

While Buster’s lovely mum and dad are soaking up the sunshine in Jamaica 🇯🇲☀️, this handsome boy is living his own little holiday life with me 😎🐶

One of the things I love most about pet sitting is really getting to know every animal in my care and making them feel part of life - not just “looked after.”

Wherever possible, I try to involve the dogs I care for in everyday experiences, because connection, enrichment and companionship matter just as much as walks and food bowls.

So, Buster joined me to meet a friend for a little evening out in Prestwich… he was the star of the show 😂

Buster was giving and receiving love, soaking up fusses, cuddles and admiration from just about everyone he met. Safe to say he made quite the impression!

It’s moments like this that remind me how special this job really is...building trust, making memories, and making sure every dog feels safe, included and loved while their humans are away.

Recently, I received this message, and it genuinely made me pause and smile.

One of my previous customers, , who moved away with her beautiful boy Ford (a lovely Hungarian Vizsla).

Moments like this remind me exactly why I do what I do.

For me, this work has never just been about dog walking or pet sitting. It’s about building trust, connection, consistency, and creating a space where animals feel safe, understood, and genuinely cared for. Ford, you’ll always hold a special place in my heart ❤️

To all of my current customers - thank you for trusting me with your beloved pets. It truly is an honour to care for them. I also want to thank you for your patience, flexibility, and cooperation, because running a service like this is far more demanding than most people realise.

The last three years have brought more challenges and setbacks than I ever imagined, emotionally, physically, and professionally. There have honestly been moments where it would have been easier to give up. But what has kept me going is your support, the relationships we’ve built, and of course, the incredible animals I care so deeply for.

When I started this journey in 2023, I expected challenges - every small business faces them. But I never anticipated quite how hard the road would sometimes be. Some of you may not know that I also live with a hidden disability, which has made navigating difficult periods even more challenging. That’s why messages like this mean more than I can put into words. They remind me that I’m making the right decision to keep going.

At the heart of all of this, I simply wanted to create a service that people could truly trust and rely on - one that always puts the wellbeing of animals first, because they deserve nothing less.

I care deeply about doing things properly. When I commit to something, I commit fully, and I’ll always do everything I can to keep things running smoothly and to provide the highest level of care possible.

How could anyone not melt looking at this face? 🥹🐾

This is Sushi - one of my regular Monday to Friday walkers and a chow chow with enough fluff and charm to stop people in their tracks 😂 (even dogs who are often surprised by how fluffy she is haha)

One of the greatest privileges of this job is that over time, you don’t just walk dogs…you truly get to know them.

Their quirks.
Their habits.
Their favourite sniff spots.
Their moods.
Their little personality traits that make them uniquely them.

And the stronger that relationship becomes, the more protective you feel over them.

There’s something about caring for dogs every day - seeing their innocence, their trust, their vulnerability - that awakens a real protective instinct.

I imagine this is the closest thing to being a parent 😂

Sushi may be independent, stubborn, opinionated (as chow chows often are 😅), but beneath all that fluff is a wonderful soul that brings so much joy and light to everyone who meets her

Meet Rex 🐾💙

This handsome little cocker spaniel is a new addition to the Wilson & Woof family, and over the coming weeks we’ll be spending time getting to know one another before I care for him during his family’s summer holiday.

One thing I always prioritise before pet sits is relationship building. Because caring for a dog properly isn’t just about turning up on the day and hoping for the best.

Dogs need to feel safe. They need familiarity. They need trust.

Just like in my previous work supporting children and young people, I understand that strong relationships are the foundation of feeling secure and confident.

That’s why I take the time to:

🐾 Learn each dog’s personality
🐾 Understand their quirks and routines
🐾 Build trust through positive shared experiences
🐾 Make sure they feel comfortable in my company before longer stays

By the time summer arrives, Rex won’t just know me as “the dog walker”…he'll know me as someone safe, familiar, and fun 🥰

Professional pet care starts long before the pet sit itself.
Welcome to the gang, Rex 🐶

Some photos say more than words ever could. 🐾 .gledhill.3

This is Rupert - one of the wonderful dogs I have the privilege of walking, and moments like this remind me exactly why I do what I do.

To many, it’s just a paw on a shoe. To me, it’s trust. It’s connection. It’s a silent reminder that this work is about so much more than exercise.

The dogs I walk aren’t just customers. They become part of my world. Every walk, every adventure, every quiet moment together builds a bond rooted in patience, consistency, understanding, and mutual respect.

Dogs know when someone truly cares. They know when they are safe. They know when they are loved.

And I never take for granted the trust they place in me when they choose to walk beside me… or place a paw on my foot like Rupert has here. 🐶

This job may look like dog walking from the outside -
but to me, it’s relationship building, companionship, and showing up every single day for these amazing animals who give so much back.

We’re a team.
Always. 🤝🐾

There’s something about working closely with dogs every day that deepens your understanding of just how vulnerable they really are. 🐾

The more time you spend with them…The more you see how much they rely on us for guidance, safety, reassurance, and trust. And when you recognise that vulnerability -
much like you do with children, you can’t help but become fiercely protective of them.

That protective instinct is one of the most powerful parts of this work for me. Because these dogs don’t just need walking… They need someone watching over them.
Advocating for them. Keeping them safe. Understanding when they’re uncertain, overwhelmed, excited, or simply need reassurance.

It’s a responsibility I never take lightly.

And then there’s Bruno… 🥹

A Golden Retriever with the gentlest soul, the softest heart… and quite possibly the cutest fluffy ears in existence 😂😂😂

He may be growing up but he’ll always be his parent's baby and I feel privileged to help care for him. ❤️

One thing many people notice about professional dog walkers is that we often keep to ourselves on walks.

We may seem focused, distant, or less social than expected…but the reality is:

It isn’t rudeness - it’s responsibility.

When I’m out with dogs in my care, my attention is on them at all times.

Professional dog walking involves far more than simply “taking dogs for a stroll.” It requires constant:

🐾 Risk assessment
🐾 Behaviour monitoring
🐾 Trigger awareness
🐾 Group management
🐾 Environmental scanning
🐾 Safety planning
🐾 Decision making in real time

Every dog in my care deserves my full attention and vigilance. Sometimes that means avoiding distractions.
Sometimes that means crossing roads to avoid uncontrolled dogs. Sometimes that means politely keeping interactions brief.

And importantly - not every dog benefits from social interaction with strangers, dogs, or busy environments.
Professional pet care is proactive, not reactive.

So if you see a dog walker who seems focused and keeps moving…there’s a good chance they’re not being unfriendly- they’re simply doing their job properly. 🐾

"You’re so lucky… you just play with dogs all day.”

Something I hear almost every day from people when they find out what I do for a living.

If only it were that simple! 😂

One of the biggest misconceptions about this industry is that professional dog walking and pet sitting is an “easy job” or an “easy way out” of traditional work.

The truth?

Done properly, it is anything but easy. In the last 3 years alone, I’ve had multiple people message me asking how to start their own dog walking business because they want to leave their jobs for an “easier life.”

But this isn’t an easier life. This is often 10–12 hour days.
This is managing the care, safety, wellbeing, behaviour, and trust of 39+ dogs and their families. This is balancing animal welfare with customer communication, scheduling, logistics, business admin, marketing, finances, insurance, emergency planning, transport, equipment maintenance… and much more.

And that’s before the first lead even goes on.

Professional pet care done to a high standard requires:

🐾 Behaviour knowledge
🐾 Risk assessment
🐾 Individual dog management
🐾 Training awareness
🐾 Emergency preparedness
🐾 Physical stamina
🐾 Emotional resilience (there are MANY Challenges)
🐾 Business acumen
🐾 Relentless consistency

It’s not “just walking dogs". It’s running a business and delivering a professional service that families trust with their beloved pets.

I don’t say this to complain...I say it because I’m proud of the standard I hold myself to. Because if you’re trusting someone with your pets, your home, and your peace of mind… you deserve someone who treats this as a profession, not a hobby.

This work is hard. But when done with care, expertise, and integrity - it’s worth every second! 🥰
