Sometimes puppy training doesn’t go quite to plan…
On Saturday evening, 8½-week-old Cali had her first shower. 🚿
Ideally, I’d have introduced this much more gradually - exploring the shower, hearing it running, getting paws wet and slowly building up to water on her body over several sessions.
But… puppies and plans! 😂
The vet found a couple of fleas and advised us to shower her, so suddenly we needed to get her wet now.
And I think that’s worth talking about.
We want to introduce puppies to new experiences gradually, help them feel safe and avoid overwhelming them. But sometimes something has to happen before our dog is completely comfortable.
That doesn't mean abandoning everything we know about helping them cope...
I used the wet room rather than the bath so she had space to move, covered the slippery floor with towels, sat on the floor with her and gave her a delicious LickiMat, shower head on floor switched off. Then turned on but a couple of feet away.
She coped beautifully… until water touched her toes.
"NOPE!!" - She ran out of the shower. I let her, then waited for her to come back
We tried again using tiny cups of warm water. She left again. This time she didn't choose to come back, so I gently brought her back to her LickiMat.
Because ultimately, she did need to be washed.
But there’s a huge amount of space between “my puppy must enthusiastically consent to every second” and “she has to put up with it, so hold her still and get it done.”
My hand on her chest gently to keep her there, but if she became frightened and really needed to escape, I let her. We used food, reassurance, lots of pauses and little breaks.
She didn't LOVE it, but she coped incredibly well. ❤️
Sometimes life says “Sorry, we're doing this today.”
When that happens: slow things down, make the environment easier, use food, reassure them, break things into tiny pieces, allow breaks and keep watching the dog in front of you.
Sometimes “that was a bit weird and unpleasant, but I felt safe and I coped” is sometimes the best outcome. ❤️
