🚨 RESCUE MISSION: HUYTON, LIVERPOOL 🚨

Yesterday, I spent the day in Huyton alongside Eleen from House of Conures trying to bring 15 domestic canaries back to safety after they were deliberately released because their owner “didn’t want them anymore.”

Fifteen little birds suddenly expected to fend for themselves. We searched, waited, watched and did everything we could to bring as many of them back in as possible.

We managed to save two. 💛

One is now safely at Finch HQ, where they’ll receive everything they need. The other is safe with another finder who I’m supporting.

But that means 13 are still unaccounted for, and I can only hope that they have found shelter, been picked up by other people, or can still be located and brought to safety.

Releasing captive birds because you no longer want them is not an acceptable way of rehoming an animal. There are rescues, rehoming organisations and people like us who would rather move heaven and earth to find space than see birds simply turned loose.

I am absolutely furious. The circumstances of this release have also been reported to Merseyside Police and the RSPCA so that the appropriate authorities can determine whether offences have been committed. I will be providing the information and evidence available.

For now, our priority remains the birds.

If you’re around Huyton/Liverpool and spot an unfamiliar canary outdoors, particularly one that appears tame, tired or is repeatedly remaining around gardens and feeders, please don’t assume it’ll be okay because it’s a bird. Take a photo if you safely can, capturing it is better and also note the exact location and time, and contact us.

And please — never release a pet bird because you can no longer keep them.

Ask for help. Contact rescues. Contact local bird groups. Contact us.

There is another option.

Tonight, two of those fifteen are safe.

I just wish I could say the same for all of them. 💔🐥
